Introduction
A nice canyon tucked in the back of Hartwell, with a scenic approach and a short series of over-hung rappels.
Approach
Park at the 2nd turnoff on the right past Hartwell Canyon. This pull out is a common jeep tour turn off so please be mindful when parking.
Follow social trail toward large approach gully. Cross the gully and stay high and left next to the cliff wall. Be prepared to fight through a bit of brush. As the walls get taller the trail cuts over from the left side to the the right. About 2/3's of the way up you will begin to encounter the rockslide. Briefly navigate the choss and slab on the right side before cutting up and to the right on some easy 4th class terrain. Hook around the corner along the shelf above Hartwell.
A more direct, yet difficult option would be to continue straight up the rockslide.
Once in Hartwell, stay high up on the left to gain an easy ledge system that works its way past Contigo, Hawk, and Big Dude. Turn one last corner and make your way to R1.
Descent
All natural anchors set off trees.
R1: 75' Very easy to bypass down ledges RDC
R2: 40' off tree RDC
R3: 75' off tree RDC.
R4: 60' off tree directly back
Exit
Connect with the main Hartwell drainage and follow back to exit vehicle.
Red tape
Stay in the main drainage while exiting. A portion of Hartwell Canyon is now privately owned land. Use caution not to trespass in gated/fenced-in areas.
