Introduction[edit]

This canyon is located just to the south of the tourist town of Tapalpa, about 2 hours south of Guadalajara. It is essentially one big waterfall with a large step 2/3´s down that towers over a steep canyon to the south. The water flow is controlled by a dam upstream so maintains water flow all year round for agriculture. Most people just do the first three rappels and return on the main tourist trail.

Approach[edit]

4km before getting to the town of Tapalpa take the left turns that goes 2km to La Cofradia del Rosario. There go to the right, passing Barranca del Refugio another 2.9km to the end of the road where there is a tourist parking area. Follow the tourist trail for about 150m from the parking lot, and cut off to the right down into the stream and follow that to the top of the cascade.

Descent[edit]

R1 - 30m - 2 bolts r.;

R2 - 70m – 3 bolts r. (the ledge here is very slippery and sloping and only has room for 3 people);

R3 - 45m – 2 bolt r.;

R4 - 18m – 1 tree l.;

R5 - 15m – 1 tree l.

Exit[edit]

After swimming the pool below R3, most people just follow the obvious tourist trail on the left, back up to the parking lot.
