Introduction[edit]

Sama Mesa Box Canyon features a 50 foot elevator downclimb, a 35 foot R downclimb at the final rappel, numerous short downclimbs in the 15 to 20 foot range, and a stemming section over log debris in the lower section. A good option for advanced canyoneers who want to try to downclimb the whole route. A good option for beginner hike-and-rappel canyoneers who want to try downclimbing on short and secure drops. If you have done Alcatraz and Chambers and want to up your game this is a great option in the Roost.

Approach[edit]

Descent[edit]

Exit[edit]

THE LONG EXIT GOING ALL THE WAY TO THE DRYFALL IS NOT RECOMMENDED. This will add 4.5mi of hiking with very little payoff. For a scenic adventure a short drive down Sams Mesa Box road offers spectacular views over Happy Canyon similar to views from the rim of the Grand Canyon.
