Introduction[edit]

Box Canyon may refer to:

Approach[edit]

Long hiking approach, unless you drive an offroad vehicle from Skye Canyon area- which you could technically get within 0.25 mile of the start of the loop. You see a square (box) on satellite view. Basically you approach it from the north walking south, you go over an old dam, enter the canyon then you'll see an option to go right- take that loop all the way around. It gets tricky at the half way point as you have to crest over a hill. There's no trail at this point. You'll see a big shelter cave on the side of a hill facing west and you basically scramble to the left of that up and over that hill. Recommended to navigate with a GPS. Then you drop into the next drainage and turn left, heading downhill and it will get more canyon like as you continue.

Expect 2-4 short rappels up to 20'. There used to be metal ladders there, but someone took them out. Canyon not done often. Expect to rebuild anchors and inspect everything.

Descent[edit]

Exit[edit]

Red tape[edit]

“Driving through the construction zone to access this area MAY BE ILLEGAL. Driving through any of the mines to access this area is certainly illegal. Also, there are anecdotal stories of climbers being fined by BLM rangers for driving the roads beyond the construction zone. Proceed at your own risk.” Box Canyon on Mountain Project

Linking Box from Hidden (as in Stav’s trip report) avoids this altogether.
