Introduction[edit]

a NEW ADDITION TO THE PRINCESS BRIDE CANYONS - ON THE NORTH END

Use the same hike-up as for Pit of Despair Canyon

other approach options were done not listed here as of this date

Approach[edit]

The drive in should be easily "Subaruable" under normal conditions, but small sandy sections and small sand dunes are likely, with occasional rocks. A car carefully driven may make it, but getting stuck or hitting a rock could be possible. Park immediately off the road or you will be ticketed.

The drop in waypoint at the top of the canyon is: 36.605205, -117.283042

a 2000 foot vertical ascent

It was not verified, but it should be easy to do a shortcut approach crossing the saddle at 36.606169, -117.280315. This cuts off the upper rappels that are of little value and saves about 1mi and 400' of gain.

Descent[edit]

r1:45' from a chock rock ldc

followed by a 15' down climb

r2:150' with some free hanging - from a cairn

r3:160' 2-stage from a cairn

1/2 a mile boulder hop thru wash

All drops in the lower canyon CAN be downclimbed, but at least 2 are very spicey and even the highly skilled would likely want a rope backup. Know your ability and act accordingly.

r4:15' down climb followed by a 10' down climb that calls for a meat anchor (crumbly vertical rock)

r5: 25' rock chock dcd (anchor set back so you'll use 50' rope)

r6: 2-stage, around corner, rock chock 50' rdc

r7:dead man 50'

r8: 2-stage 20' knot chock center + 20' with 10 feet in between

A 20' downclimb/slide in a flute ldc

r9: 12' from an arch dcl

r10 30' from a rock sling

Exit[edit]

You do not exit in the same place as the approach - you will be slightly more to the North. Be aware of that if you exit in the dark.

Red tape[edit]

Note that there is no camping on this road. It is heavily patrolled at least once a day and the rangers check aggressively to see if you're camping.
