Introduction[edit]

Sidi Ahmed is a very easy canyon with a moderate approach, a few fun rappels, and a great palm oasis at the end. While not very challenging, it makes for a fun day.

  • A nice photo of the whole route. Ascend the gully on the right, up over the mountain heading left, and down the obvious slot in the center
  • Approach[edit]

  • Parking area
  • From the parking area walk through the palms and head up the drainage. Use the gpx file to turn NE and start climbing up a gully.

  • Walk up the palm oasis
  • Start ascending this gully
  • After maybe 25 minutes of going up, turn left (NW) up a smaller, less distinct gully.

  • Then turn up this gully
  • Looking back down the second gully
  • This will bring you to a saddle, a flat area on top of the ridge.

  • The flat area on the ridge
  • From here go down the other side into the drainage that becomes the canyon.

  • The drainage that becomes the canyon
  • Descent[edit]

Follow the drainage down until you arrive at at an obvious rappel with bolts. Upon closer inspection, this 5-meter rappel is easy to downclimb. The next 5-meter rappel is also easy to downclimb.

  • The first downclimb
  • Next is a 10-meter rappel, followed by an 15-meter rappel. This 15-meter rappel can also be down climbed.

  • 15-meter sloping rappel that can be downclimbed
  • Finally, the canyon nicely slots up into a 10-meter rappel. Here, you can create a natural anchor off a tree, or place use the existing chockstone anchor on the right. Inspect this chockstone anchor closely, as it may have come loose.

  • Chockstone anchor
  • Following this rappel is a tricky downclimb where a partner assist is helpful

  • Downclimb after the chockstone rappel
  • After this is a 10-meter rappel off a single bolt and a piece of cord tied through a hole drilled in the rock.

  • 10-meter rappel in the "slot" section
  • At the bottom of this rappel is a natural anchor around a rock on the left. This is the final, sloping rappel. While some may say this is a 40-meter rappel, you can actually rappel about 21 meters here and walk off/downclimb the final 19 meters. This downclimb is not very tough for experienced canyoneers.

  • Final rappel
  • Walkoff section of the final rappel
  • Exit[edit]

Walk down the wash until reaching your vehicle. Enjoy the palm oasis.

  • Walking back down the palm tree-lined wash
  • Red tape[edit]

    No red tape.
