Introduction[edit]

Spring Creek has historically been known as the best canyon in Bungonia. Sadly, as advised by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NSW NPWS), the canyon is closed due rockfalls in the area.

See the NSW NPWS Bungonia State Conservation Area alerts webpage for up-to-date advisories of Spring Creek's closure.

Approach[edit]

Follow the GPX/KML, probably the best way in. When descending south off the main ridge down to the creek, stay on the minor spur to the creek rather than following the shallow valley as the valley is very loose.

Descent[edit]

  • All anchors are stainless steel expansion bolts conforming to best practise
  • Carry a shifting spanner and an anchor repair kit (spare plates, washers, nuts, maillons etc) because flood waters have been known impact some anchors in this canyon
Problem ID Metres Location Note
1 1m Slide into deep pool
2 2m Slide into deep pool
3 15m RR Abseil (or can be done as a slide) begins sloping then sharp drop that can be jumped (approximately 2.5m jump)
4 8m RR
5 10m RR Can be jumped... a little technical... don't jump out too far and edge can be slippery
6 27m RR Use access bolts to protect party members
7 8m RL Low and sloping except for last few meters
8 20m RL Dry down to P9 ledge
9 50m RL Two anchors... one places you closer to flow (a small as it normally is) the other one keeps you dry
10 45m RR Out near edge. Use approach bolt to access.
11 40m RR Out of flow but finishes in a pool
