Introduction[edit]
River Gauge Styx River at Jeogla 206001
- 12 ML: "Just enough to be fun"
- 35ML: Comfortable maximum
- 88 ML: Highest run
Can camp at the road leading to the drop-in point.
Approach[edit]
Car shuffle - driving from bridge over Styx River, take the second right turn-off onto Falls Road (there are two Falls Roads, take the southern one). Drive until a locked gate, turn right and drove 100m down a fire trail and parked at a fallen tree. Leave a car here. Drive back to Kempsey Road, head north, take the next left and drive down the "northern" Falls Road. Take the road that goes down to the creek; road is only suitable for 4WDs.
Two cars is not compulsory, about an hour to walk the distance between the bottom and top cars along the road.
Descent[edit]
Rap | M | L/R | Description |
---|---|---|---|
From car, easy creek walking for about 30 mins until first drop | |||
5 | CR | First drop is a waterfall, downclimb on CR and do 5m jump at bottom into big pool. Don’t do big jump where you land at base of falls, there are rocks there. Drop could (should?) be bolted | |
5 | CL | Jump past hydraulic | |
R1 | 12 | CR | |
2 | Jump into long pool | ||
4 | Jump into another big pool. Could also downclimb (or abseil down small waterfall if drop was bolted) | ||
R2 | 20 | CL | Chockstone abseil. If low flow, abseil behind chockstone and swim out through waterfall. If high flow, chockstone bag jam for guided rappel for first person is necessary. There are two sets of double bolts as anchor options: lower option on wall, from this anchor it looks like the rope may get stuck in the crack between the boulder and the wall but pull-down should be fine. Using the higher set of bolts probably avoids this potential issue. Recommended to throw rope bag (pull strand) over chockstone or rope retrieval will be problematic/impossible |
2 x 60m pools | |||
R3 | 8 | CL | On ledge |
20 mins / 600m of creek walking until final series of drops. Possible exit gulley right at old ruins. | |||
R4 | 6 | CL | Instead, can jump into small pool on CL.. High flow, allow 25m of rope length to reach R5 |
R5 | 20m | CL | Abseil onto ledge on CL of waterfall |
R6 | 55m | CL | Abseil all the way into big pool at the bottom. High water there is an undercut on the RR at the base of the falls that should be avoided. Abseil can place you behind the falls, be sure to exit to the river left. |
Exit[edit]
1km of creek walking until exit. Walk up first big obvious ridge on CL. Ridge is nice for walking, scrub is a bit bushy at the top, walk-out takes about 1.5 hours.
