Introduction

The "7th Hole Cave" in Oman is a challenging cave system located on the Selma Plateau in the Eastern Hajar Mountains, renowned for its impressive 120-meter free hanging descent, considered one of the longest abseils in the region, making it a popular destination for experienced cavers/canyoneers seeking an extreme adventure through a complex network of underground chambers and tunnels; often explored with the goal of exiting through Tahri Cave.

Approach

Descent

Do not underestimate this cave. Make sure you understand the route, water levels, ascending, and anything else related to caving. You should have a minimum of 3 60 m ropes to complete the large wall section.

There are multiple ways to enter the cave system. The first option is a big rappel directly through the 7th hole. If you don't have a long enough rope, you can take a short approach hike to find the anchors and make multiple rappels into the cave. A 60-meter rope is sufficient for this.

If you plan to do the full route, be prepared to rappel down a big wall of at least 90 meters. Our group did a two-stage rappel with a rebelay about 30 meeters down. There were two bolts and no place to stand, so you'll need to be comfortable hanging against the wall and transferring ropes. From there, it's about another 50 meters to a large alcove where you'll need to use your momentum to swing into and rig up the last 40-50 meter rappel to the ground.

After the big walls, most teams utilize fixed ropes installed in the cave for the abseil. These ropes may need to be carefully managed and inspected before use. They are all 10 meters or less in length for ascending and descending.
