Introduction

A nontechnical and stunningly beautiful canyon in Guara. A must for all canyoneers! This canyon can easily be completed in a day, with a short approach and exit. Guided groups go through, but is typically not overly crowded and is plenty wide enough to easily pass groups. It's hard to imagine a more fun canyon.

  • One of many incredible jumps
  • Approach

There are multiple approaches. As long as you get to the small dam at 42.220224, 0.043624 to start, you'll see the best parts of the canyon. You can park just east of this dam and walk down the obvious path 15 minutes, or in Lecina to the NW, from where you walk 25 minutes downhill.

    Descent

Follow the watercourse. There are multiple jumps, all of which are optional. There are some minor hydraulic hazards at certain flows, all of which can be avoided. You'll eventually get to a bridge from the 14th century. You can exit here, or continue down for more canyon. It's worth continuing.

  • Blue water
  • Narrow squeeze
  • Swim under a boulder
  • Rio Vero
  • A long swim
  • Easy walking
  • Open section
  • Clear water
  • Alcove near the exit
  • 14th century bridge over the canyon
  • Exit

Exit the water on canyon right when you arrive at an ancient dam. There is a very obvious, maintained trail that will likely have day hikers. You can follow this trail up to the lookout and up to Alquezar, or down to the bridge at Puente de Fuendebaños, from which you can continue downcanyon to Camping Río Vero, where you left your car.

    Background

This canyon has been occupied and explored for centuries or millennia. First descent may have been thousand of years ago! The ancient dams and architectures, which have since had renovations, were constructed in the 14th century.
