Introduction[edit]
A canyon off the north side of Munds Mountain consisting of several overhanging rappels and a rugged, scenic approach.
Approach[edit]
Take Schnebly Hill Road to the parking pin. From there, pick up Munds Wagon Trail and follow it a short distance to the approach drainage. Cross the road and hike up canyon, then leave the drainage LUC per the KML track.
Weave your way up to the ridge navigating some class 2 and 3 terrain. If following the KML track the route should be fairly straightforward. If you’re fighting through significant brush, you’re off route.
Traverse along the Coconino shelf all the way to R1. Use caution at the one exposed section. PG rating for one airy move - not recommended during inclement conditions. Throughout the approach watch for loose rock.
Descent[edit]
All rappels are either partially or fully overhanging.
R1: 80’ off tree at the edge of the shelf, multi-stage. Tricky start that requires good technique and self-sufficiency. Consider use of a PAS and/or hard lock off to enable use of both hands while transitioning over the edge.
R2: 45’ off pine tree in the watercourse, set back about 20’.
R3: 40’ off tree RDC.
R4: 50’ off tree LDC. Could alternatively be combined with R5 for one 180’ rappel. Before combining rappels, look to ensure there is no debris at the base of R4 that could stick a rope.
R5: 90’ off bush RDC, multi-stage.
Exit[edit]
Follow the drainage back to Schnebly Hill Road. Cross the road and take Munds Wagon Trail back to your vehicle.
