Introduction[edit]

Cable canyon is a full day of super fun technical slot canyoning adventure that is often referred to as the younger sibling of The Squeeze. It is made up of several different styles of canyon, from relatively wide but very deep at the entrance, to narrow and slot like with keeper potholes in the middle, followed by the extremely wide mouth at the end. The canyon features several rappels and multiple keeper potholes which make this canyon suitable only for those teams which have experience and equipment necessary to escape keepers.

These keepers vary in difficulty with the season, from relatively straightforward when empty or completely full, to challenging when partially filled.

Getting There[edit]

The trailhead can be accessed from HWY 24 either on the East by way of Goblin Valley and the Wildhorse Road or from the South via The Factory Butte Road. The Factory Butte Road and the Wildhorse Road eventually turn into one another at the junction with the Salt Wash Road. This junction is the turn off towards the closest vehicle access point for Cable Canyon. (See maps and descriptions in links to beta provided below for further details.)

While these roads are generally good enough for most vehicles to travel on them, it is important to note that these roads can become impassable and very, very muddy in or after recent rain.

Approach[edit]

From the road proceed proceed towards the large break in the sandstone band on the west side of the river. Cross the river and through the break then angle Southwest towards a lone cottonwood tree which guards the exit of Cable canyon. (38.49634, -110.95122). From the tree hike 1mi (1.6km) until a large side canyon comes in on the left (38.49930, -110.96513). Follow the path of least resistance and occasional cairns until you read the top lip of the canyon. After gaining the lip, strike out cross country, aiming for the side canyon that serves as an entrance to Cable Canyon (38.51350, -110.99365)

Descent[edit]

Exit[edit]

The exit of the canyon will be familiar as the first mile of the canyon (from the lone cottonwood) was crossed on the approach. Simply follow the same path that was used on the approach to exit back to your vehicle. Mouth of canyon to lone cottonwood, to break in sandstone cliffs, across river, to road.
