Comments: Angel Slot was a surprise favorite! Originally planned as a back up canyon on my trip, I found it to be a highlight. The dirt road in is in very good condition suitable for passenger cars. Easy approach, very scenic canyon with fun challenges and totally dry. We replaced the webbing on the first anchor. The 50' downclimb we decided to rappel double strand off a chockstone, but take care it is easy to stick the rope here if the rope isn't centered on the stone and slides to either side pinch point. The optional rappel past the end of the canyon is a must do. The anchor washes out frequently, so it took some minutes to gather the necessary rocks to build a cairn anchor to complete, but it's a great drop not to be missed. We left the rope fixed and hiked back to retrieve it and the webbing. So don't expect to find any signs of an anchor.

CONDITIONS

Anchors & Rappels:

  • All anchors are in good shape and the webbing looks brand new.
  • The first drop is a simple sling that does not extend over the edge. There are no rope groves--that I could see--and it would be good to replace this with a courtesy anchor in the future to keep it that way. We instead used a fiddle stick off the quicklink here--maybe over kill but RTR said the pull can hang up here.
  • The second anchor is a courtesy anchor. There is a small place to stand as you go over the edge so the awkward start for the last person is not all that awkward.
  • There are other anchors at some of the down climbs, some we used, dome we didn't.
  • The final drop can be down climbed, but it is spicy, as RTR indicates, and most will want to--probably should--rappel this.

Water Exposure:

  • No water present in the canyon. One tiny mud patch that can be avoided.

Weather:

  • Sunny day. Not too hot. Clear forecast.

Approach:

  • Very short and relatively straight forward, but can be tricky to identify the wash that accesses the canyon without a map/gps. This should be a minor concern, howerver.

Exit:

  • RTR says it is well cairned but we did not find that to be the case. There are some but we "lost" the trail here and there. With a gps and good bearings this wasn't an issue though.

TRIP REPORT

  • Group Size: Group of 4

  • Total Time: 4 hours 10 minutes

We took a person down their first ever technical canyon. They decided to join us at camp the pervious night so we did a crash course on how to properly rappel, add, and remove friction via a critr, things not to do, etc. We set up a small practice rappel at camp and had them drill and practice simulated rappels--including what to do if becoming inverted on an overhung drop (some thing that would prove immediately important). They took instruction well and we soon felt confident in their ability to join us.

The first drop in Angel Slot is a 95 footer that begins with a brief overhang. It is always difficult, I've found, for new canyoneers to navigate this type of obstacle. How to go over and overhung edge can be explained, but it really has to be experienced to fully understand how to position your body and center of gravity. Our new canyoneer did a good job trusting the rope, leaning back, and getting their butt and center of gravity low enough, but they struggled to move their feet down too and ultimately inverted. We had a belayer that caught them but our intrepid new canyoneer also never let go of the brake strand.

After this moment of surprise and panic we had them rap a few feet down the ledge and stand there for a second to feel stabilized and collected before finishing the rappel.

That was their only moment of struggle in the canyon. They excelled at all the other rappels, never made a misstep rigging to the rope that we had to correct, and rocked all the down climbs we had them attempt. Their mind was a bit blown from the whole experience and it was a lot of fun getting to share the experience with them.
