Comments: Morning run. 2:20 c2c with some moseying around. R3 or so (the one with the small tree directly near the anchor) looks about due for replacement next month. All other anchors were pretty good (the overhang having another 9/16” webbing setup). Water level is very low; you can keep your feet completely dry with some good awareness. Last rappel has some water but is avoidable with a wide stance.

Comment: Beautiful day. Did lots of gardening (I wish everyone else would do a little sometimes).
Changed a few anchors. Whoever has been replacing bolts here (and in Rubio and other canyons) is NOT doing a great job! Some over bolting. Some poor locations. Some right in the water course. If you don't know what you're doing - DON'T BOLT!

Comment: Part of a 3 canyon Black Friday run. Quite a few anchors had their quick links open which is worrisome (like open c). The one rappel next to the tree early in on the canyon has some wear at the bend that might need replacement in a few months if there are a couple of additional runs. Other than that canyon is in good shape minus the kelp forest near the end of the canyon (noted in earlier report). 1:42 c2c

Comment: Early morning start (6:30) which dictated a bit more thermal protection for me. 1:41 c2c; replaced first anchor as mentioned. The one rappel (I believe it was r3) where there’s the tree below was showing signs of edge fraying on the webbing. Ran into fellow canyoneers in the parking lot gearing up to run the canyon and mentioned this anchor for replacement so I believe it’s no longer an issue. Nice morning to see the sunrise!

Comment: Because I'm a glutton for punishment, ran canyon again with a group for some beginner rope management training. First anchor still has the abraded webbing on the outside loop of the quick link side; we opted not to replace and backup/soft start but will likely replace if I run it a third time (maybe sunday). Kelp still everywhere; one of the party members explored the small cave under the tree at R2 until encountering a mess of gnats. Ran into a bat on the second to last rappel which was pleasant.

Comment: Evening run of Bailey with an expedient team; 2:40 c2c. Down climbed a fair amount of rappels; current conditions are exactly like Willie noted. Kelp is pretty overgrown in the last section leading up to the final rappels. Poison oak was surprisingly not as terrible as LSA or adjacent canyons. No fear of getting anything wet until the final rappels, where you’ll get some ankle splash from the surprising amount of water this late in the season. didn’t use a rain jacket and opted for a sun hoody which made the hike very comfortable.

Comment: There is still a surprising amount of water flow even through the last rappel (see pic). Much of the webbing has been recently replaced. And the new bolts on R4 have been repaired; top bolt converted to glue-in all thread; bottom bolt is now engaged. And the frogs are out in force, which is rare for Bailey.

Comment: My special challenge was hiking up in the heat of a 90F+ day right at noon. It was nice that the canyon is still flowing water much of the way through and the last 3 drops. The water at the last rappel is nice to shower and clean up after sweating so much on the approach. (see pic of last drop).

Comment: There is still waterflow through the last 3 drops (see pic of last drop). Water temp is good for no rain shell. R4 has some new bolts that are not installed properly, but given the length of the one bolt that pulls almost all the way out, neither (assuming they both are the same) will fail in the direction of pull.

Great | Very Low | None | Special challenges | 4 hours | 1 people | Willie92708 (973 reports)
Comment: My "special challenges" included trimming the PO back on the drop-in trail and cleaning up some annoying brush before R1. Certainly a lot more trimming could be done down canyon, but all I worked on was major deadfall pieces that were really in the way. Another challenge was fixing up much of the anchor webbing which was tied oddly (like sliding X's on bolt pairs, extra overhand on a bight on single loop, unknown knots). Also, R4 and R8 are missing webbing, but you don't need webbing for either. And best of all, the striped biting flies are all gone!
The water flows through R7 (rap after 100 footer), disappears, then reappears at the bottom of R12. The final rappel has a solid amount of waterflow (see pic) and I got totally soaked, but that that felt good as it was already getting quite hot.

Comment: The "special challenges" was to avoid being "eaten alive" by the biting striped (tan with stripes front to back) flies. Those flies are out in FORCE around the water, mostly gone in the dry middle canyon, but back for the last 3 rappels which were wet again. A surprising amount of water still flows over the last rappel (see pic). And, yes, the drop-in trail still needs the PO trimmed back. I avoided it by dropping into the creek directly off the main trail.

Great | Very Low | Rain jacket | Special challenges | 2 hours | 1 people | Willie92708 (973 reports)
Comment: My "special challenges" was to: 1) avoid the poison oak on the drop-in trail by using a location upstream as there is too much PO to avoid 2) dealing with surprising significant water flow (see pics) wishing I had brought neoprene socks and 3) getting a 4:30 PM start and wanting to be done in by dark. Given the water temp and flow, I was very glad I had a rain jacket with hood. And I did make it back well before dark.

Comment: Flowing all the way through the canyon following another rain event. This canyon doesn't seem to drain much watershed-wise. I guess that makes it good if you don't like getting pushed around by water flow but want a little splish-splash.
