Comments: We sandtrapped 3 raps and used toggles on 3 others. It is easy to combine some of the rappels. I cleaned up some unnecessary webbing, and in hindsight should have removed some other webbing as well. This is an advanced anchor canyon, so webbing use should be minimal. One short swimmer, but no wetsuits needed as it was pretty warm out.

Comment: We enjoyed sunny, cool spring weather on our hike to Buckeyes Canyon. The approach to the saddle was 1.43 miles, with an elevation gain of 1,147 feet, and took about an hour. We loved the spectacular views of The Swell during the approach hike. After reaching the saddle, we descended another quarter mile to the canyon’s entrance, which took about 15 minutes. We carried wetsuits but decided to explore the canyon further before suiting up. We found some water in the canyon, but only one pothole, about waist-deep, was unavoidable. Thankfully, the wetsuits weren’t needed.

Buckeyes is a stunning canyon with distinctive and beautiful rock formations and several arches. The rappel into the grotto area and later through the small arch were both incredible! Buckeyes felt like someone had cut a giant slice through The Swell, and we were descending through that. We finished the technical section in about four hours, and our group of six completed the canyon, car to car, in five and a half hours. We fiddled most of the rappels and built one new cairn anchor. Buckeyes is one of my new favorites!

Comment: Run romp through Buckeyes with some friends who hadn't done it before. We had 2 folks that opted to don wetsuits for the last section of pools (which were 100% full) and 2 of us that did not. Both parties were happy with their choices. The final window rappel is seeing unfortunate and entirely avoidable rope grooves due to parties pulling their rope from an angle that causes grooving.

Comment: Fiddled everything and sand trapped one (last rappel of upper section). Lots of big rappels (most multistage) so make sure you know next anchor before pulling rope. Lower section is much more scenic than upper and has pools up to chest deep. Alcove is solid chill spot with great views of tip top arch up to the right.

    CONDITIONS

Approach: Standard approach. Nothing eventful here.

Water Exposure: In the lower section of the canyon there are some potholes that are holding water. Not all of it is avoidable so you will get wet to some degree or another. There isn't any swimmers, but it will get up to chest deep. In hot weather a wetsuit is not needed. Some in our group brought them just in case they were needed. While we could have all done it without wetsuits, those who had them used them and we glad for it. The other thing to keep in mind is that the canyon does get shaded in the later part of the day--which is likely when most groups will reach the wet section.

Anchors & Rappels: There are some pieces of webbing present. We didn't place them but opted not to cut them out either. Each person will have to make their call on this.

We fiddled and sandtrapped most drops. We did have an issue with a sandtrap getting stuck on in the upper section (it might have been the last rap in the upper section) but there was a large ramp we walked up on the north side of the canyon that enable us to pull the sandtrap out of the constrictions. It failed to empty all the sand before become lodged.

Exit: The exit is simple, just follow the use trail(s) out of the canyon back to the parking area.
