Comment: Visited alone and hired a guide (wore my own canyoning helmet that I had with me). Flow was higher than I'd had here before, and the water was warm and didn't need a wetsuit at all. Was unable to go behind the waterfalls though because of the high flow (the guide said it would be unsafe). Really fun as always!
Noticed a new zipline circuit above the river that had appeared since I was last here 2.5 years before, and asked the guide about it. He said just two months ago one of the ziplines broke due to corrosion, and the person (a guide who worked the ziplines) died when he fell 80 meters to rock. I looked up the article and confirmed -- very very sad! Always be wary of your own safety when doing activities like this. https://amp.milenio.com/policia/tirolesa-revienta-en-slp-muere-guia-turistico

Comment: The river upstream of the put-in was completely dry, with stagnant pools. However at the put-in the hydroelectric plant was dumping a significant amount of freezing cold water into the river, enough to create the waterfalls again from there for the rest of the descent downstream. So overall the water was low but still enough to enjoy the activity. The water was so cold that one member of our group got hypothermia even though it was a sunny day and we all wore wetsuits. I have been here several times since 2008 and normally the water is warm and flowing enough to make great waterfalls. The guide said that in Dec/Jan this year the river was completely dry and they were not able to do the tour.

Comment: we hired a guide at the top of the approach trail. 200 pesos p/p + 50 for life jacket rental. this avoided paying the 100 p/p entrance fee to the park at the bottom, but we mostly did it to avoid having to go with a large group from the bottom. flow was pretty high, with a fair amount of whitewater at the base of the falls, making it hard to see where we were jumping. this is why we decided to hire a guide. it ended up being more fun because we didn't have to worry about jumping onto unseen rocks and it would have been very difficult to check depth in the whitewater. beautiful place though it kind of stretches the definition of canyon as it's very open and most of the drops could probably be climbed around. which would be silly. the cave behind the 2nd to last waterfall was amazing, especially at high flow. water was a nice temperature, never even slightly chilly. I've changed the season info to reflect what we were told by our guide. camping at the bottom was 100 p/p plus 100 for the tent space.
