Comments: Dandahra Falls Canyon Wednesday 7/2/26 - Sunny 34ºc. Low water 0.3m³/s 26ml/d 8 hours return from camp, 2 x 60m ropes with pull lines & rigging: 1x 80m for bottom pitches. Straight forward all the way to R6 then used redirect to next double bolt with rebelay at R6. From rebelay straight to the bottom of flow. From R7 the beta did not make sense. 5m CL of R6 was another double bolt we did not use & nothing was seen past this point to the water. Only 5 bolts on the first climb out & 3 on the 2nd boulder. From there straight forward up the spur on the right looking at the falls to meet the tourist trail back to camp. Care should be taken with rope retreaval from R5. Friction of rope around corner where the wall ends.

Comment: Dandahra Falls Canyon
Wednesday 31/12/2025- Sunny 28ºc. Storms on exit. Low water 0.3m³/s 26ml/d 8.5 hours car to car, taking time, stopping for swims and admiring views. Also recovering from injury and inactivity. 2 ropes: 1x 60m CE4Y 9.0 sickline ; 1 x 80m imlay 8.3 canyon fire. Very UV exposed. Broad brim recommended for summer. Please minimse suncream use to save the frogs. 7.15 start. Lovely walk through rainforest in the morning light and birdsong. We skipped the upstream section, and entered from lyrebird rock. Easy waking down to creek from Lyrebird rock. R2. (R1 from lyrebird) Spent some time trying to locate bolts. Low water had me looking for them in wrong spots. (Note: There is one flow protected rockface Canyon Centre Left with a small teatree that would make for a good wet abseil in low flow.) R2. Dry abseil, remember to wet rope before rigging. R3. Straight forward. R4. Combined ropes. Rooster tail for ants @26ml/d. Pitch is correctly written as 65m although it could be completed with 2 x 60m ropes. There is a small standing ledge 2m off pool to initiate pull. Also possible to set a short rope finish into deep pool with sloping entry. R5. Straight forward. 15m slab in corner. A previous party left a carabiner at R6, possibly confusing DB belay station as redirect? Not an ideal redirect, would make for horrible rope pull around a 90º sharp corner. R6. From large block rigged with 60m ce4y. Measured out approx 40m. Partner abseiled beyond R7 single bolt redirect without seeing and then 3m beyond R8 anchor. Was able to communicate after noticing. After 5m of bleed and 10m of release they were unable to reach traverse anchor. Was able to effect knot bypass rescue efficiently using a hollow block, and petzl basic as rope grabs to attach imlay fire for lowering and releasing ce4y through 8 block. In all approx 75m required to safely reach comfortable ledge at beginning of traverse. Leader then reset joining knot and rappelled to R8. Relocated found biner to redirect R7 along way. Rope drag difficult from R6 to R8. Best to pull over top of boulder. Rope is likely to fall into rock snag platform mid waterfall at the same level as the traverse. Easy retrival in low flow. Could be problematic in high flow. R8. Semi hanging reblay from P8 to join partner at traverse DBB. R9.a Skipped 5m traverse and final mullti. Instead, water levels were suitable to rappel direct from TDBB through flow 70mtr to final pool. Exciting option for low flow. Good rinsing. No retentive present. Very easy rope retrieval. Bolted exit climb requires 15m of rope to lead and belay trom tree. We used dynamic that I carry as bonus rope pull in sticky situations and knife ridge simuls. After the scramble to mid spur view of Dandahra falls, N.P.W.S had thankfully & mercifully cleared the trail back to lyrebird rock that same day. lots of angry jumping ants however, I got done 3 times. Partner got a tick. This is a hot, hard scramble ridge, maybe allow some extra water, I wish I had. One of the unique and cool things about this spur is the views, of both Dandahra falls and the rest of Gibraltar range to East. The best part of the exit is that for once there is a swimming hole back at the start so you can cool off after the trek out. This is an epic trip. 5/5 A great end to the year. | |||||||
