Comments: Possible first descent of Full Eagle this year as we had to rebuild the anchor at R1. Water levels friendly, no hydraulics. One new giant logjam in upper Eagle; climbed up the middle, then downclimbed DCR. Jumped back up to the trail (bit brushy) after the upper section, hiked down, and dropped in above Punchbowl Falls. Spent awhile lounging in the Metlako amphitheater but abandoned kayaks were found (sorry, PhiL). Adjourned to Thunder Island Brewery post-canyon to recuperate.

Comment: Super chill, relaxing descent of lower Eagle. Saw several deer foraging in the creek just where we dropped in above Punchbowl Falls. Only two rappels, but lots of jumps, floating through the narrows, and basking on rocks in the sun. The drop into lower Punchbowl is now clear of wood - and some of the logjams downstream have disappeared. Kayak under the logjam in the Metlako amphitheater has disappeared. Adjourned to Thunder Island Brewing to recuperate post-canyon.

Accidents from people jumping at Punchbowl Falls (usually non-canyoneers) are on the rise again. I suspect it's just a matter of time before the area above the falls gets close to public entry by the Forest Service.

Comment: We dropped in just above Punchbowl to run the best section of the canyon. Spent a good time playing in the Metlako amphitheater and found someone's lost kayak stuck under the logjam. Packed out more trash that'd probably been washed down from Punchbowl. Another fun day in Eagle!

Comment: Great day. We added a stainless steel quick link to the left bolt on the last rappel. The link on the right bolt is not corroded but it may still need a stainless steel link if it is not currently stainless steel. We exited the canyon after the upper section, and entered again below punchbowl falls. I will add some information for the exit to the beta. I recommend bringing tubes. they make the swims more enjoyable and some of the slides.

Comment: Terrific canyon, some great jumps, and long leisurely swims through the narrows. Hydraulics are easily avoided at current water levels. Go get it while you can... From the number of people (and dogs) swimming & lounging in the pool below Punchbowl Falls, it's only a matter of time before someone gets the bright idea to jump the falls, gets injured, and the Forest Service imposes a closure of the area atop the falls. Anchors are all in good condition. Tightened down a loose nut on R3. Hauled out a bunch of trash left behind by some idiots with no regard for the environment. Spotted fish in several pools and one osprey.

Comment: Air temp expected to be 100F, so we got an early start around 0730. R1 and all the rocks in the creek are super slick. No issues with hydraulics, some good jumps, some good slides, some good swims.

If you are contemplating doing Eagle for your first time I'd really suggest doing the Punch Bowl shortcut and starting just above R2 (you are greeted by a fun jump and then R2) - the sheer distance from R1 to R2 is pretty long and arduous. Some escape the creek and go back up to the trail. Since the fire the hills are a little loose and this should be done with caution.

R2 and R3 and the jumps in between the the most fun parts of the trip.

Comment: Great day. Started at R1 and built and anchor around a boulder. Was 120’ to the base of the 2nd tier. It is still jumpable from the middle of the feature. All narrows swims and slides seemed good and in play. Replaced webbing at Punchbowl and the line is magic. Lots of people observing. R3 was a mess so we cleaned it up. Next group through please bring stainless rapides to replace the ones that were there. Log jam after R3 was a bit wild but doable dcr. Don’t trust any logs as there are many and some move. Mostly uneventful and packed with fun. Very slippery.

Comment: Water was at extreme, even flood level. Not recommended. Nearly every slide had to be avoided. Metlako flow very high, dangerous to approach.

Comment: There is a hornet nest in the rappel tree by Skoonichuk (R1). It's still usable, but be careful not to bounce on this anchor. Our 200 foot static rope did not quite reach the water on the Melatko rappel (R3), necessitating a mossy downclimb at the finish. Wish I had a short pull cord to avoid that. I also wish that my wetsuit had sleeves. I lost a GoPro in the Loowit hydraulic, too deep for me to find or retrieve. Sorry for littering.

Comment: We dropped in a little bit before Skoonichuk falls and played in the subsequent hydraulics that follow. It is possible to slide/jump into all hydraulics at this flow and escape fairly easily. The most tame-looking hydraulic right after Loowit is hard to escape (if you go directly into the center). Stay DCR to easily avoid the hydraulic if needed. Always have someone ready with a throw rope if necessary. We exited after these hydraulics, hiked back to the trail, and dropped back into the lower section. There are a few logs that either missing/additions but none that block where the usual jumps are.

Comment: Ran the usual route dropping in right above Punchbowl and ending a bit after Metlako. Water flow is still low but since all the rappels are out of the water, it was no problem. For LPAR, be mindful of the rappel and pull side tangling since both rappels are free-hanging.

Comment: With current water conditions, this a great canyon to take beginners. The largest jump is probably 20' and is below Metlako falls. I'm continually amazed at how beautiful this canyon is...even if it's my third time!

Comment: Due to time, we only ran the last section of Eagle Creek. The canyon was much more enjoyable the 2nd time around since we cut out the river walking between rap 1 and rap 2. What I'd recommend is that for people who have the time and haven't had the experience of river walking in the PNW, run the entire route. Otherwise, run the short route. While there were some parts with hydraulics, they could all be bypassed since rap lines are out of the water or jumps are far enough away from the white water.

Comment: Don't let the number of rappels deter you from doing this canyon. This is one of the best canyons in the region with spectacular narrows, rappels, jumps, swims, and slides. We dropped in at Skoonichuk falls and exited shortly after Metlako falls.
