Comment: Explore the most of the rest of the Hughes Creek. Lower section is fairly neat and worth doing, took about 1.25 hours from the car to get to. We explored to where marked on the map, took about 5hrs to get to that point (probably not worth repeating). Will probably bring going back to do the one rappels and maybe scout that other drainage that drops in

Comment: We encountered multiple dead birds and a dead baby bear in the keeper pothole (bear was removed so future parties are not forced to swim with it). We drilled out the lower two hook holes as they were blown out. Water level is 4+ feet below the lip.

Comment: Great day in the creek! Splashy but not pushy. All were surprised at how cold the water was, and grateful for the frequent sunny areas to warm up in. All anchors had relatively new webbing. R7 is a "cairn" anchor of a small dishwasher size boulder with long webbing; bouncy, but good & solid.

Comment: 2.5mm shorty wet suit was cold but manageable. Wouldn't want any less. All anchors looked good. Final pothole was a few inches short of totally full.

Comment: Ran the full canyon as outlined in rope wiki. Flow has tailed off now as the snow has mostly melted from up high on the mountains. Still a great run and a fun time in the water!

Comment: Large tree over 05S065 a few hundred feet past the turn off, would add 1.25 miles each way if it's not cleared. Did not attempt canyon, only passing through exploring

Comment: FR 631 was closed at the junction with the I-17 so we took the 253 instead and approached the canyon from the south rim, pioneering an extra spicy exit route. Plenty of water - a few swims and several wades. A 3/2 was nice. No dead things today.

Comment: Canyon had very limited water flow, mostly in the bottom 10% of the canyon. All raps were easily down-climbed excepting the final rappel, which probably could have been down-climbed DCR. The exit was extremely overgrown with poison oak, stinging nettle, and poodle dog brush.

Highlights included finding a large growth of ripe blackberries halfway down the canyon, and three rabbit holes to explore.

Comment: Fun canyon! Fun jumps and swims.

The 'first rappel' described in the July 2025 accident report is not the main first rappel, nor is it a very clean rappel - the edge is significant. We avoided this one.

Instead, there is a bolted anchor above the water in the main stream course - to access it, bypass the first rappel and continue upstream along the bank for only a few minutes to reach the first major pool.

Otherwise, we had a blast. The flow was fairly strong, but avoidable except for the second rappel, which puts you directly in the torrent! We instead extended from an upper natural anchor.

    Great canyon, beta is excellent.

Comment: 2nd descent with two people exactly one month after the first descent. We added 8 bolts in the canyon, including brand new bolts at R1 and R2, a single bolt at R3, and a traverse line anchor at R4. Only R3 and R6 still have single bolts. Flow was noticeably lower than the month prior (maybe 30-40%). We attempted the approach the day prior but disturbed a wasp's nest in the forest, resulting in over 10 stings to one team member, so we turned back out of caution and returned the next day for a successful full second descent.

Comment: Teacups was certainly pumping today meaning extra precautions to ensure we where not getting swept over the edge, especially with corkscrew rappel. Only bypassed the large repel because the pool at the bottom, looked a little too gnarly, especially with some of the new people we had in the party. In order to get out of toilet bowl, you must be a very strong swimmer in this flow. We were able to get the majority of the party through by having a fireman belay pull the tail of the rope and the person out of the toilet bowl. I want to say after doing teacups last year that there is substantially less sediment in the majority of the pools, but it’s still probably not a good idea to do much jumping but I definitely found myself swimming a tad bit more than last year.

Comment: We only ran the lower section and spent much time at the bottom of R3 assisting with something unrelated. The retaining wall anchor was very loose and had to be tightened; all others were good. Unfortunately, the trash is starting to smell and is quite noticeable without higher waterflow flushing it out. The Rock Creek of the Gifford. :(

Comment: Great day in the creek with some fun folks. We ran full Eagle. At Skoonichuk, found new webbing at high flow rappel. It was mossy green color, so we left it. Also found at the high flow rap, piles of human refuse & toilet paper ::sigh::. Rapped Skooni on the recent bedrock + cairn anchor DCR to the first tier; jumped the second. Floated & played in all hydraulics, slid H2, it is currently clear of obstacles.

Put out 65' rap side for Punchbowl, length was perfect (a few feet above the water line). Traversing the log jam was surprisingly stable. For us, all logs were above water line and stable; no floating logs to navigate. Felt easier to pass than the log jam the last couple of years.

100' of rope was perfect at Metlako; beta updated.

On exit, it is easy to be lured out of the creek too early, resulting in an uncomfortable (if short) 'shwack. Continue downstream another 50 yards until you have easy, no 'shwack access to the flat rocky landing. Head up the well worn use trail from there.
