Comments: Amazing, world class canyon! There are now several re-belay stations above rap 1, rap 3, and rap 5 that make rappels and rope pull much easier.

Comment: Called the dam and was told that there were no planned dam releases but if it rains, it's out of their control. Received the same speech upon arrival as we checked in with the guard at the gate. Dropped team off at the top and drove down to Cascada Pozo Azul. Paid the entrance fee for four and was able to get a ride with the owner back to the top. Ran the multi-pitch with the grotto but the pull was difficult and required three people pulling from different angles. The group behind us rappelled past the grotto to a piece of red webbing DCR and set up a hanging rebelay. This looked to have an easier pull.

Comment: Many tourists were gathered by the Rio Toro below the final rappel. Expect to encounter crowds on weekends both at the base of Gata Fiera and Barroso. We went with local Bajos guide Tony Segura. We asked the hydroelectric dam employees for assurance that they would not be releasing water prior to our descent, and they told us they were “no longer giving this information to individuals”. From R4, we stayed CR of the grotto to the alt R5 rebelay which made for clean pulls.

Comment: One of my favorite canyons. As requested by a previous poster, we placed a single bolt down canyon left on the ledge for jump one, to facilitate a hand line. For whoever will clean the free hang rap station at the large waterfall towards the end: make sure you attach yourself to the pull line, as it can easily swing out of reach into some incredibly high flow and get stuck on horns inside the waterfall

Comment: Big jump, slides, large free-hanging rap, technical raps in the flow - all in an awe-inspiring setting. This route had a bit of everything a 5 star canyon needs, plus fresh-water crabs to entertain you at the anchor stations.
However it's very slippery (until you reach the acidic exit river which is free of slime). Ran with local guide, Tony. He said the water was higher than normal, as their was calf-deep water under the drop-in bridge. This became apparent on R5 where we got buffeted by squalls of falling water (intense but fun). Exited via the road up to our shuttle car - which was is a long steep climb, but on an excellent road which made it much more forgiving. Shuttle was longer, but worth it.

Comment: Excellent weather! Went with a solid local canyoneer (Tony IG: @tony_segu) from Bajos del Toro and had an awesome time. Time included a detour up the Barroso drainage.
We let the dam know before and after as described- no problems.

Comment: Very technical canyon -- our team of four partnered up with another four from Toros canyoning group. The sun never came out all day, so the water didn't have the beautiful blue of the Gata Media section just upstream. The rocks were very slippery for the first part of the canyon, and I fell more times than I had the previous 5 days of canyoning combined. However the first main drop of 200ft free-hanging definitely had spice that we hadn't encountered the whole week up to now. We had a long rope but chose to do the 2-stage drop into the grotto, and did indeed have a hard pull that we were able to release with a Petzl Microtraxion and a handled ascender, off a rock wayyy out away from the falls, and 3 ropes tied together. Toros told us the previous time they did it they needed to set up a z-rig. The water was on the low side overall according to the Toros guys. Great canyon and a great finish to a week of canyoning in Costa Rica!

Comment: You can access this canyon on your own, just ask the guard at the ICE ( 50 meters form gata bridge) if the gates of the dam are going to open. We did this on owr own so ill share the experience.
First: We used two cars. One of them was left at pozo azul waterfall entrance ( very nice people) and the other on was left in font of the guard of the TORO Generation plant right after gata bridge. To get there: USE WAZE APP. Type Catarata del toro on waze, follow road 708 after this point for aprox 2.7 kilometers until you see to your right a hidroelectic company with a guard. you must pass a small bridge, that is where you start the route. The entrance is in the right side. After this, leave a car in pozo azul ( 5 km from el toro waterfall point) the other one next to the guard. put your gear and wet suit and get down to the creek bellow the bridge. here is where the fun starts. 500 meters walk in river and then the first rap First rap 6 meters Second rap: 60meters ( the window Amazing view) Third Rap: 8 meters Fourth rap 50 meters ( multipitch 130 meters ) 2 para bolt that descend to a rock fifth rap: 80-90 meters ( there is one safety parabolt under the grass in front of the flat, there are 2 in the rock in front facind the cliff sometimes dificult to see, perfect conditions. sixth: 50 meters. fourth or third rock to your right facing the canyon. Good condition. Exit: Option 1. Exit to pozo azul ( our plan ) walk down the toro river until you see a gigantic 158 waterfall to your right, there is a very good path that leads you to your car. Option 2. ILLEGAL. leave your car at the entrance of TORO II POWER PLANT ( yellow and blue gate that says no enter. HIke up the alphalt road to your car. they never make a problem but thats the heads up. exits are easy. make sure you go with good forecast. Feel free to contact me to any information. I DO NOT CHARGE, EVERYTHING IS FREE. +50688956451 Enjoy. |
