Comment: This is a really neat “cliffineering” route with lots of interesting scenery and quite a few fun large rappels!

We took the ridge approach from the base of the 89A switchbacks to avoid the long shuttle (which would have been even longer due to construction where the 89A crosses Pumphouse Wash). Storms have done a number on the ridgeline, and it’s looser and dirty than it was a few months ago. Once at the drainage there was lots of thrashing through locust bush and other unfriendly vegetation to get to the first rappel where we were greeted with a beautiful cliff edge view of West Fork!

The rock formations in this area are neat and the back drop view was pleasant throughout the descent. Eventually the scenery changes from rugged coconino forest into a red rock Sedona-style canyon in the lower section which was pretty cool!

No webbing was replaced.

The lower nontechnical section of the canyon is full of debris, and blackberry thorns which we were mostly able to avoid staying up above the drainage RDC. This annoying area is over fairly quick as suddenly you arrive on West Fork trail, which it in itself is also a pleasant and beautiful hike that never gets old.

This is a solid, underrated cliffineering route that is worth doing and made for an enjoyable day!

Comment: Pretty lack luster rappels for the effort. Thorny brush on approach. Not really a canyon, more like just a break in the rock. Not really worth doing.
