Comment: We hiked in on a road from zion ponderosa camp ground, did the canyon and hiked to the exit shuttled car. It beats doing a loop. first rappel off big fat tree DCL with hiker throwing down our webbing. nice. next two rappels are bolted and fun. hike out was easy. overall. pretty canyon, easy access, no bushwhacking. Met ranger hiking through at top who casually checked our permits

Comment: I was planning on running it solo after a hard day doing Telephone, but Tom was also going to run with a friend (who did not so up), but 3 others were also there to run it waiting for another with a permit. Since I had a permit for 6, all was good with 5 in a impromptu group. The approach hike is easy, but getting a bit hot by midday. We did the 3 drops, using a FiddleStick for the 160 foot R1 as the main East Rim Trail runs directly against the top of the drop. R2a is bolted, and R2b has webbing around a sizeable tree trunk log. Combining R2a and R2b looks like a good way to stick a rope. The rest of the canyon has a few easy downclimbs, then a short hike back to the main trail. Overall, we took a very relaxing pace, even ate lunch at the top of R1.

Comment: No webbing at the drop in. We asked some curious hikers to toss our anchor down after us.

The second stage of rap 2 has a stump jammed in it. The wilderness desk made us aware that it is now used as an anchor, and that there has been an accident on it (see below). After reading other trip reports for the last 2 years, it seems that it was originally believed the stump would not be permanent. Welp, looks like it is. I know people skip the anchor, but sooner or later someone is definitely going to stick their rope there. So I have changed the beta. I cut out the part of the old rope anchor that wasn't buried and made a new one out of webbing.

  • accident according to the wilderness desk. Someone had made an anchor by slinging a horn on the stump. It popped off. There is some root sticking out that makes for a much better anchor.

Comment: Autumn colors on hike trail. Walk in permit wide open to get in the morning. The Ranger reminded us R1 most likely needed webbing so we did retrievable. The tree & anchor are next to the rim trail so it is possible that the park or hikers remove it so that there is no trace. R2 different than it was 3 years ago. Bolts at R2 are still there that make fore a 2 stage 130+ (including pothole walk over & better pull line). This time the pothole in the middle was filled with sand and a tree stump wedged at the lip as an anchor as R3. Most likely that would disappear in the next big water flow. R3 anchor can still be skipped if taking this a 2 stage from the bolts.

Comment: No anchor on the first rappel as expected. Asked some nice hikers to toss us down our webbing and link. Easy and straight forward canyon. Despite the ratings, I thought this canyon was great. May not compare to the other great ones in Zion, but buy itself it sure holds its own weight. Nice easy hike with great views along the east rim trail. The 2 rappels are quick right at the beginning. It's a beginner's warm up for englestead I think, where the first drop looks bigger than it appears.
