Comments: This is a great way to get to the Maiden Falls area without a treacherous hike (in at least.... the exit here is another story). Raps were straightforward and fun. Raps 1,3 and 5 were present and in good condition, we replaced the anchors at Rap 2 & 4 which looked like they had been washed away by a storm. We brought a 250ft rope as the author of this canyon had done as well as pull cords as we weren't sure whether we needed them. We didn't - thus the longest raps in this canyon isn't more than 125ft unless you plan on combining R2 and 3 as a 2 stage as described on the main page. The descent is great, as is spending time at Maiden Falls. The exit was extremely challenging. You literally climb straight up a rock slide with loose rocks for almost .5 miles. Then, take a left turn exactly where the gps describes - we overshot and climbed too high, then ended up having to double back which added significant time and headache to the exit. Trust me... you don't want to do this!!!! Once you take the left turn, the exit, while brushy, begins to get somewhat easier. You skirt the cliff bottom until you can slowly begin to climb up the east side of Maverick basin and slowly climb the hill at a diagonal until you hit the road that you can walk back to the parking area. The descent is great, the ascent is not for the faint of heart. Choose wisely!

Comment: This is an OK way to Maiden falls, I would fix ropes and jug out the descent, the exit is probably the worst exit I’ve done. It’s meandary and takes quite a while, so if you’re not up for the terrible exits, going back out the descent route would be great, could even climb R4 and R2 (fix them just in case).
The descent is not noteworthy in any way, the rock is a dirty basalt so bring a rope you’re okay damaging. This is a destination route and I’ve rated it according to the canyon, 2stars with the destination included (5 star destination). Maiden direct is another route down, but I’d just fix that one too. 1.5 star descent, 0 star exit, 0 star road (personally wouldn’t want to take anything not HC 4x4, leaving the RAV at the road). For the exit, there is a big boulder field that would not qualify as scree but is quite annoying. The rocks frequently will come loose, but I had no trouble maintaining progress without slipping. Great temps right now, will get too hot in July unless spending all day near the water, imo, have fun!
