Comments: Great day out- easy access and exit. Low flow- at parking lot, the boulders and cobbles are mostly exposed with just a bit of water flowing between. We took our time.
Pool below R2 was low and required somewhat exposed v2 boulder moves to get to R3 chains. A temporary handline can be helpful for off-the-couch folks. Pool still has 4ish large logs that would make swims challenging at mod+ flows.
Edited the beta for R3 length from 115 ft to 140 ft. Unless you’re intentionally practicing your contingency lower-out, plan for 140-150 ft…
Bottom of R3 sees hikers, so mindful rope lower/toss and watching for loose rock/gear is advised.

Comment: Fun casual training day in low flow. Cleaned a bunch of old webbing from R1 as that's now bolted, but actually rapped from a boulder mid-stream to stay in the flow R1. Practiced traverse line to R2. Swam across to R3 with no problem, but plenty of wood debris in the pool now. Rapped the full length of R3 to the pool at the bottom. Did the jump keeping my legs up and firmly hit the gravel with my butt. Overall very slippery in the canyon.

Comment: Technical sections of canyon are in quick succession. Lower water made it a little tricky to get to the anchor after R2. A thick branch aided in climbing, if it gets washed away, a boost or a hook might be needed in low water. Traverse line was unnecessary because of flow, but we did it anyway for practice. Slippery surfaces and precarious staging areas adds to the intensity of the canyon. All anchors in good condition. Water depth at final jump was 5 Ft, we did it anyway. I(200lbs) hit bottom fairly hard (no risk of injury with proper technique), lighter jumpers only slightly. 6 hours total time included a lot of messing around, practicing techniques, chasing fish, etc. This canyon can be done pretty quickly if desired. Very fun day.

Comment: Be respectful on your access, private land. R1 need new webbing or to be bolted. R1 and R2 are out of flow. R3 can be done at moderate levels and less at one 180ft rappel, but you will get wet. The views are amazing and playing in the pools are fun. R2 to R3 can be swam easily, the flow over R3 lip looks bigger that it really is. R2 and R3 have small staging areas, so larger groups need to stay spread out. Great Canyon |
