Comments: Scouted westwards along the rim and, after some serarching, found a good place to rappel down onto the giant rockpile west of "The Deep." Explored a bit westward, then backtracked and set an anchor to rappel into the bottom of "The Deep" which is super-dramatic. Scrambled out the eastern side through two small cave-like space. Even on a dry day, the bottom of the Hellhole was muddy & slippery. Found a memorial to a caver who died here in 2013. Signs of erosion everywhere; much of the terrain is not stable. Explored a bit eastward along the rift and eventually found a place to climb back out. This was not ideal, however, as the terrain was slippery and the rock quality was terrible (e.g. excavating footholds to get out). Once one person had escaped, it was easy to drop a rope to the rest of the team. Setting a rim rope ahead of time would have been a far better way to go. (There may be a better exit if one bushwhacks east along the foot of the wall to the far end, but we didn't explore fully in that direction. There definitely is a faint trail heading that way atop the rim, however.) Sage word of advice in the Hellhole: expect everything to be loose, uneven and slippery. Don't take unnecessary risks!
