Comments: Kids were 2-7 in age. We backpacked the littlest one through about half of the slot and almost all of the approach and exit. The kids did great but the entrance to the wall was trickier than anticipated. We brought one harness for getting the kids up the wall. The wall was more intimidating than the videos make it look. We belayed them up on a meat uneventfully, and they all climbed up pretty easily without needing it too much.
We brought a 8' big bird, but next time I would bring a 30'+ rope.
Keeping a harness on the 2yo was nice because we could pick her up like a puppy over obstacles at times. All the kids did great and loved playing peek-a-boo (scare) with the grown ups.
My 2yo kept wanting to play in the exceedingly fine sand instead of travel through the canyon. Plan that in next time if you expect to keep moving. The canyon is a really fun sandbox with exceedingly beautiful sand for young children. She would plop down at some of the narrowest sections, and we were mindful of avoiding creating a bottleneck.
The area has a grid of trails everywhere. It is easy to follow carins and end up off-track. We got off track and added maybe a mile to our trip when traveling between peek-a-boo and spooky.
The road is terribly washboarded. Letting air out of the tires helped.
Found a good campsite about half-way to spooky gulch trailhead that was remote.
Time is car to car, including peek-a-boo and spooky gulch (6.69 hours).
For our kids, they got tired when starting spooky but dug deep and did it.
It had rained a few days prior, but the road was dry and the canyon only had a few muddy spots that could easily be walked around.
