Comments: Time of 6.5hrs includes the return trip to the shuttle.
You will want to bring bug spray as the black flies can be particularly bad; however they were not too bothersome this time of year. Water was low-ish but flowing thru most of the canyon, only disappearing 3/4 of the way thru the canyon and returning again in the Arroyo Seco (refer to the cover photo for the flow of this trip). The bushwhack was manageable, similar to Eaton. If this canyon was traveled more frequently it could be an amazing hiking experience. The small falls in the middle of the gorge can be downclimbed DCL, but if you are inexperienced you might want to bring a 15' handline.
We expected to encounter no one in the gorge, but were surprised to come across 2 men probably named Jeb and Eli illegally camping about 20 min downstream from Bear canyon. About a mile in, we passed a young man solo hiking upstream from JPL. He said he'd been repairing the Gabrielino trail in Long canyon and it's in good shape (reflected in the exit beta on the main page).
The Twin Canyon trail thankfully existed. Look in a small drainage for a handline. It will get you up to the rough trail.
- update: I got PO from this trip. cool.
