Comments: We took the normal Sayarim approach (instead of the one listed for the extended route) as I prefer that one and they both get you to same spot and only splits into two routes for the last uphill fully choice (make sure it’s the gully that starts with thr dark short dry fall climbs for extended!). I highly recommend the extended canyon version as it adds one rappel and a fun little narrow slot section with some downclimb challenges. We found the canyon as expected, we took our time as it was the first real canyon for one member of our group. Sayarim is a nice starting DV canyon since it doesn’t have the usual ridge climb many others do. We replaced webbing on the rappel at the eagle rock, it was looking crispy. The rest of the canyon had newish webbing and everything looked good. Such a nice easy day.

Comment: Enjoyable trip, this was the second time for us through Sayarim; last visit having traveled the non-extended version. Definitely enjoyed the canyon even more via the extended route, although I think I prefer the approach route we previously used for the non-extended version. The two approach routes almost converge at their final gully ascents so either one would work. I felt less comfortable on the walk down "saddle 1" than I did on the other route's "scree climb" and would have preferred doing that.

We did run into a group in the canyon that planned to do extended but went in via the other gully approach. If you don't climb up a couple very short brownish-rock dryfalls at the start of the final gully approach you're probably in the pink (north fork approach) gully.

We stayed to the left (South) side of the approach gully and that seemed to work just fine compared to the gps track, which stays on the right (North) side.

All anchors seemed in good condition, one had a rope backup to a second boulder that felt like overkill to me but we left it. Webbing at some anchors had clearly been recently replaced.

There's some spots in this canyon where there's no plants to be seen, just completely surrounded by rocks, and I felt like I might as well be on Mars or something. I know that's not too uncommon in Death Valley but if folks are looking for that experience without a rough ridge-climb approach this canyon does so nicely.

Comment: After having done both versions/forks of this canyon, this is the more interesting version & it doesn't add that much time.

Comment: Excellent trip and a wonderful beginner canyon to bring somebody through for their first time. I don't often find myself enjoying the approach in DV, because I'm a wuss and don't like elevation gain, but man was this one pretty and enjoyable. All the webbing was fresh and the Cairns were solid. The first anchor broke off some rock when we went to rappel, but the anchor was not compromised what so ever. If you're looking for some epic rappels, this is not the canyon for you, but it does make for a fun, quick, and pretty romp.
