Comments: First descent.

Rain the night before had soaked the vegetation, and combined with overcast skies, it made the approach wet & cold. So much so we actually stopped halfway up the steep section to change into wetsuits.

The first descent took a different approach to the one now mapped here. We started at the switch back north of the trailhead, dropped down to the river, and bush whacked south-west until meeting our creek. A large boulder field alongside the creek provided somewhat easier hiking than the bush. On the return we followed the creek bed out, and from the river took a direct bearing straight towards the trailhead, finding much easier open forest walking than our original entrance.

The initial plan was to climb much higher on the approach and drop into the drainage from above, but time & temperature kept nagging at us to find a quicker route. We were lucky, and found an easy place to cross the southern drainage, scooting around a cliff band to meet the open slabs.

From there everything went pretty straight forward, with back-to-back rappels into the beautiful lot.

The flow was manageable (mod-high), but boy did it get cold quick once your in it.

Going back on a sunny day would be great - though bear in mind that might bump up the flow from snow melt a little.

Comment: Second descent. All anchors survived their first winter well, and have now been doubled-up.

A sunny day and gorgeous views made the experience so much more enjoyable. This canyon really is unique in Washington currently.

The snow pack imagery looked very similar to the June 2025 FD, but on arrival at the slot the flow was considerably lower. However throughout the sunny day it rose, and the final rap ended up much closer to FD conditions (which was cold, but with rain the night before). Overall a very sporty but manageable flow. Despite the nicer weather the cold was still there and the shiver of its name appeared.

GPS track has been updated with refined approach/exit route, along with additional advice for tackling the trickiest parts of the approach.

Rough timings (without major breaks or (de)gearing):

  • Trailhead to base of slot: 1.5h
  • Base of slot to top: 2h
