Comments: Low elevation, easy access, short day and great seasonal flow makes Skookum a lovely winter objective. The tall waterfalls are so fun and the flow is dispersed. At moderate flow, you could pick a line straight through the flow or a line to keep your head dry if you wanted to. As the creek is so open, it felt warmer than other canyons in similar conditions. 35F at the trailhead and we weren’t cold in the canyon. FR-7315 is gated from December 15 to May 1, so we parked at Sun Top Sno Park which added 1.75mi and 900’ of elevation gain to the approach. 3.5 hours car-to-car.

Comment: Awesome pay-to-play ratio for this one. Flow was fun but not challenging. Very cold water (I wore fleece underlayers, 6/3 mm of neoprene with a hood, a rain jacket and neoprene gloves, and I was chilly after the last rap but generally a good temperature) Beautiful last rap!

Comment: If you find my VT prussick by R2 please let me know. Just a few feet above anchor on flat spot. 814-592-4211 thanks!

Great canyon with drive up, 4 back to back raps, and quick exit. Recommend goretex hood over helmet for r4. Got brainfreezed

Comment: Fun day! Flow was great but the water was extremely cold. Most of us tried to stay dry on R3, but R4 is great fun in the dispersed flow. I managed to accidentally leave a closed system at the anchor, so one teammate got to ascend the final pitch. That is a cold, wet ascent, 0% of which is dry. Not recommended 😂

The 4h car to car includes the ascending shenanigans.

Comment: put in 4 anchors to safely descend the canyon. There is 2 dry rappels that we did to access the canyon. First one is cord off a tree down about 105 ft. Second is webbing off a tree, 120ft. This takes you to a tree above the first big waterfall. ~200ft. after that, cord off a tree DCL ~220ft. On the last rappel you will probably be unable to hear any whistles from your rappeler.

  • " Most canyons were still running high around Mt Rainier, but Skookum was good. I met up with Lili Marlen and Sarah Jorgenson that were in the area for a fun day out in the falls. 3* 4C1- 1mm 4h 3pp. Before we got into the canyon we did a quick drone scout, just to make sure we did not need a boltkit..."
