Comments: Third time down the Santiam. This is a terrific creek to run on a hot summer day. There was much jumping and lounging in pools. Practiced some swiftwater skills around Tomco Falls.

Comment: We pack rafted this at about 95 CFS. Much better as a float than a canyoneering route. I'd recommend pack rafts if the flow is close to 100 CFS or higher. Beautiful canyon, but not sure I would have enjoyed it as much if I was walking/swimming the whole thing.

Comment: What a great trip! Our first canyon and well worth it. The water was a bit chilly for the first swim... walked about .8miles before having to jump in... this was probably the longest swim, approx .2mi per our watch. After that was mostly walking/climbing and occasional dips. I swam more than my wife because my shoes didn't feel secure enough to scramble on some of the rocks. We tried to stay out of the water as much as possible.

She loved the slot, never knowing our river was like that anywhere, and loving being able to be in that.

Comment: Another fun trip down the Santiam. No technical obstacles, but most of the fun here is exploring and checking things out along the way. There are nice sections where you can drift on your back looking up at the canyon walls. Tomco Falls was kicking off some current, so we spent some time at the bottom practicing swiftwater skills. There was much jumping.

Comment: Just the ticket after a dry dusty backpack along the PCT. Dropped a car at Cascadia State Park and hiked the road (~40min). Dropped in and floated most of the way back. Tomco Falls and one unnamed rapid required a bypass DCR. Ropes & harness unnecessary. Helmet probably a good idea per slippery rocks underfoot. Lots of water-worn rock and miniature arches... a pretty fascinating place. This canyon is probably quite dangerous in high water conditions.
