Comments: Great day in Spry! It was a rainy forecast so we decided on Spry as a reasonable pick. It was lightly sprinkling at the start but weather cleared up quickly (until raining on us while waiting to unwind the shuttle)

Pools up to waist deep. One avoidable deeper pool if you are able to do a mildly tricky rappel to a redirecting fin. We wore wetsuits due to the rain and due to having someone that ran colder on a cold-ish day

Comment: Longest rap is 160 and that's rap1. I didn't use a wetsuit but I run hot and it was a hot day.

Some pools are deep but deep section can be avoided by stemming. I got wet up to mid thigh ina lot of the pools.

Comment: A total classic! Beautiful and fun!

Please try to utilize ghosting techniques though out this canyon to prevent rope grooves from continuing to develop and deepen…

After the entry rappel (definitely 145ft & pools were avoidable) we were able to downclimb many of the other shorter raps. There are plenty of large high quality raps throughout that we really enjoyed.

The slot sections were very pretty. Water was at most waist deep. 4/3 wetsuits were plenty comfortable.

The long boulder field downclimbs were fun and engaging, albeit very warm, would be a scorcher in the summer!

Alot of juice for the squeeze for this one, what a great day!

Comment: Dry run on Monday, Sept. 9th but there was a lot of rain in Zion that afternoon.

Comment: One or two deep pools up to your chest. Lovely time of year to go. The weekend after Memorial Day worked out pretty well in terms of visitation. Though it was tricky to find parking at the trailhead.

Comment: Spry was in rare form with flowing water throughout the entire canyon. This made the descent a little more challenging but a lot more fun! We put webbing on a new glue-in anchor at Rap 5. Webbing at Rap 6 is still good but wearing fast due to the awkward start. Overall super fun canyon and great day!

    • Total Time: 7 hours, not including the hitch hiking. We started in the afternoon and finished in the dark as we hiked the social trail by the river back to the car.

    CONDITIONS

    Anchors & Rappels:

All of the Anchors in the canyon are in great shape. Tom Jones had put in a new glue-in bolt at Rap 1 just the day before.

I don't remember which number of rappel it is that has the terrible rope groves, but there is bypass rap a few feet before it off a wedged chockstone. This rappel drops into a pothole that is currently a swimmer and has a bolted anchor on the exit.

We added a quicklink to the chockstone rap as it only had a bail-out ring on it. We left the bailout ring in place as well because we didn't think it was a great idea to untie the pinch anchor around the chockstone as it was pretty set in place and we didn't have snips to cut the bailout ring off either. If someone else can remove it please do. In the meantime I'm hoping no one looks at the ring and quicklink and says "Hey, free quicklink."

    Water Exposure:

We didn't know the conditions beforehand but we expected some water so we brought wetsuits just in case. We spent time at the beginning of the canyon trying to avoid the water since the canyon was in the shade and at times a lot of wind was blowing up canyon. We thought it would be too hot in the neoprene if we were only to get a little wet, but too cold without neoprene if we got soaking wet.

At the downclimb just before Rap 4 we encountered unavoidable water--a swimmer--so we suited up. From here on out it was a mix of avoidable and unavoidable water. We were glad we had the wetsuits and in retrospect we should have just put them on at Rap 1 instead of eating up time trying to stay dry.

Comment: Avoided most water. Couple thigh deep pools in middle. One chest deep pool at end. Fiddlesticked or CEMed most rappels.

Comment: Spry was a fun little canyon. We powered through the approach which was a bit hot and used a few tricks to do spry completely dry. We did jump in the (clean) pool at pine creek though. I really enjoyed the technical section in spry, it has some interesting rappels.

Comment: The group all wore 5/4/3 wetsuits though they weren't needed for much of the canyon. 8th rappel still had a mandatory water section about waist deep. Another pool at a later rap (9th?) wasn't worth stemming over and was about chest high (this could be avoided by descending further DCR on the rap). 6th rappel still has major rope grooves; I decided to rappel far right into the slot towards the extra anchor section (after the stagnant pools below the chockstone which used to have webbing for an alternate rap) pull from this side was easy and seemed to have less grooves.

We left the car at the beginning of the wash entrance. Hitch back to the car was easy.

Comment: Very low water conditions. Only unavoidable water was on rap 9, waist deep. All anchors in good condition. The Comb rappel (tree) had no webbing, try to keep it that way and stay in the water course instead. Be prepared to stemm high and clip if you need to replace the anchor below the watercourse choke stone below the comb.

Comment: There is no snow on the approach as we were warned. The narrow hallway at the end has a deep part right where is gets wide. We had one person skip the wetsuit and he said he was fine.
