Comments: This was a "chill" late morning run, since I did not want to do anything lengthy. Water flow is surprisingly high. Maybe the bottom of class C if you stand directly under the most channeled flow (see pics) I bumped into another party of 4, and we did the last rappel together. I had a shortie wetsuit, but did not wear it. My rain jacket was enough for the going directly into the waterfall on the last rappel using the DCL anchor off the giant cedar log.

Comment: Cooler day made for a lovely trip. Saw lots of jays, quail, and a woodpecker on the way up. Anchors all good.

Comment: We did some special rigging to stay right in the middle of the waterflow on some drops (special challenges), because we had wetsuits, and the flow was awesome (see pic)!

Comment: Anchors 1-4 were changed. 5 looked okay. We used the large tree LDC for rap 1. Flow is nice and there isn't much algae. We were all glad that we had wetsuits.

Comment: The approach, drop-in and much of the canyon had hard pack snow; some of it icy. Crampons would have been useful; micro-spikes were helpful but not enough. As such and not wanting to get wet in sub freezing air, we did some creative rigging to stay out of the water and to get down the steeper snow slopes (special challenges). We looked for Randi's phone at the bottom of the last drop with no luck. Turns out someone did find it a couple days later.

Comment: Since it was quite chilly with a stiff breeze, I used alternate ghosted anchors to avoid water spray or even getting my feet wet (special challenges). The flow is quite respectable; recent thunderstorms obviously perked up the flow (see pic)

Comment: Waterflow is still decent. All the anchors are good.

Comment: Flow is still decent (see pic). Anchors are all good, although some hiker messed with the webbing on R1 on the DCR side. I retied the mess so it's good now.

Comment: The hiking air temp was pleasant thanks to the cloud cover early in the morning. The water flow was surprisingly high for such a dry year (see pic). The recent thunder showers may have stoked up the flow a bit. The recent rain reduced the dust factor hiking to zero; a nice change from the typical Anchors all have recently replaced webbing. There was a worthless 6mm fixed-line after the last rappel tied on rock, roots and small bushes; made no sense why anyone would leave such a line in place.

Comment: Combined with Monkeyface. Hiked the approach trail to Vivian while still wearing my 5mm wetsuit because I’m partially insane (not recommended). Minimal water in canyon, full wetsuit was overkill and could have gotten away with a rain jacket only. Excellent scenery. As of today, there is either webbing or bolts in place at all rappels.

Comment: Weather in the low 70's, water temp cool but fine with rain jacket.

Comment: I did the first falls as a two stage: (R1) I used an existing anchor upslope 15ft on canyon left from first pourover (80ft to prominent tree with ledge for perhaps three people and anchor, abrasive rope pull but ok), then (R2) clean 90ft for the second stage. In hindsight I managed to downclimb canyon right past "R2" falls in Ropewiki description (oops). (R3) off tree canyon right as described. (R4) off bolt canyon right as described (there are two but probably easier to pull using one). (R5) off tree canyon right (work right of logpile above). I went through the canyon at 9am and did not need the rainjacket I wore (but did get wet). Solo 2.25hr trip, first (and last) time in this canyon.

Comment: I was a bit hot during the afternoon on the approach, but nice in the shady "canyon". Water is still flowing OK (see pic), enough to get wet if you chose to get under the waterfalls. There is no webbing on the standard anchors for R1 & R2. There is webbing (fresh) and bolts for R3-5.

Comment: We ghosted the first two rappels and used the existing webbing wraps for the last two. It's a pretty canyon and there are lots of nice big trees.

Comment: Ghosted off of the large tree for R1, the alternate was missing a quick link and went through some brush. Wore a 2mm and was hot the whole day; a rain jacket should suffice at this point. Encountered some large deadfall on R5, cleaned what we could (didn’t have a pocket saw) and ran the rope in the gap between the 2 thick branches to make sure the pull was clean. Got there on a Sunday at 9am; recommended with the current influx of people that you either get there early or plan to add ~2mi each way to get to the camping/parking area on a weekend. |
