Comments: I attempted to access whale creek by following a game trail up the ridgeline south of whale creek. This ended where it was too steep to continue at 2200 feet. Going more north is impossible. I explored around to the south but did not find a path. The top of the ridgeline is 2800 feet so there was still a ways to go. Back to the drawing board!

Comment: Good conditions. Big rap is 230' not 270'. Current anchor placement seems to avoid most sharp edges. I cleaned up the first edge to be much more rope friendly- but still exercise caution. Last rap with the rooster tail is no problem. Definitely do NOT need 4x4 for this road.

Comment: Bit of a thrash to get in and get out, but some quality (and big!) rappels. Water levels were about perfect today. Didn't bring a 300ft rope, so we ended out doing a dry brushy two-stage rappel immediately DCL. Beware getting your rope stuck on this one. Need to be on your game on the big drops. The last chute where the creek funnels up and horsetails out into open space will get your attention. Long shuttle; possibly best with a vehicle you don't love too much. High clearance recommended.

Comment: This canyon is impressive - hands down. There are a couple big drops, an enormous 275 rappel, and a narrow chute at the end which jets the water out over a free-hanging rappel. We ran the canyon in miserable conditions where the sun never showed up and it misted/drizzled most of the time. The 275 rappel should not be taken lightly. Despite padding two friction points, we still managed to core shot the rope as there was a third friction point that you don't see until much too late. Setting up a guided rappel would not be a bad idea on this drop. We set up most drops in this canyon except the last one. In the last drop, the water funnel into a narrows section and it should not be taken lightly. Road access is open. Despite all pre-cautious, this canyon is definitely a 5 star canyon and I would happily run it again...when it's sunny.

Comment: While scoping this canyon from the top we discovered a major tree fall blocking FS road 5410 just past cat creek. There are two Logs 4 - 5 feet in diameter crossing the road preventing any further motorized travel. This adds about 1.75 miles of walking to the drop in point of Whale creek. We did not do the canyon.
