Introduction[edit]
Approach[edit]
The canyon starts at Inspiration Point, so there are a couple of options in reaching that it. As a loop, one can hike up Castle Canyon via the Sam Merrel trail about 4.8 miles. Note that it is the "common" route, as there are other options with connector trails like the Mt Lowe railroad trail that are shorter.
As a shuttle, park at the Eaton Saddle trailhead and hike down Mt Lowe Rd about 3.5 miles to Inspiration Point.
Once at Inspiration, note a ridge immediately north of there with a noticeable trail along it. The trail will take you to a small clearing around 34.2224, -118.1124, where there is no more obvious trail. Look south west and you'll notice a dirt clearing and some trees, this is the start of upper Rubio. You will likely have to bushwhack to reach it but it is relatively short.
