Comments: A hidden little gem in west fork with some funky little rappels and multiple exit options. Time is for establishing a new sneak exit and venturing up casner caning draw a short distance. The canyon itself was dry, but the draw had some deep pools and one short but mandatory swim before the exit. All 7 rappels have anchors in place. The largest rappel being closer to 80'. We planned to establish a new sneak exit and we did. Originally we planned to exit up the draw but soon ran into deep un avoidable pools that were very cold. After a few cild swims we turned around and continued to the west fork confluence. At the confluence with west fork we took a drainage up on the right back to the car. West fork exit is neat and pretty but longer and requires a short (30 min) shuttle. The sneak or alternative route will enable a shorter loop but requires route finding up loose terrain. We found staying high and right of the drainage to work well. The water in the draw was very cold.

Comment: Quite a bit of bushwhacking on approach and many downed trees throughout the canyon. Lots of ferns and other vegetation throughout. A few very nice rappels. No water on descent, but one swimmer near the bottom of Casner Cabin Draw and a couple shallow pools in West Fork. Exit was long and strenuous but beautiful. | |||||||

Comment: Unique Coconino slot that drops into casner cabin draw. All anchors except for one were set to safely complete the canyon. Would be smart to bring extra webbing to set what would be r3 or R4 from a large fallen pine tree in the watercourse 30' back. We used a Fiddle stick here. Short approach, Good Rappels, and a West Fork Classic hike for the exit. There is a fairly well worn trail as you get closer to the bridge.
Water can be filtered at canyon confluence with casner cabin draw, and at the last and o ly unavoidable pool. |
