Comments: Echoing previous report, first big rap does have two points of rappel currently set with two sets of webbing. While the lower rap point may help you, the two pinch points (lower rapide ring to wall and a slotty wedge coming off the rap) are rope stick points. These anchors are not in free space but a fiddle may dissolve the issue here if using the lower anchor. Rapide might have flipped to stick our working rope but pulling rappel side released the system. Second rap has a few obstacles for rope to catch and a potential rope punch point, be mindful of pull strand and you should be fine. Exited with the shuttle, other than blackberry bush thorns and a potential swim, all was well. Time reflects slow descent and exit in the dark.

Comment: A decent route with a few memorable spots. Lots of thorns getting to R1 and all the way up to R2, then it starts to clear up. The first large rap has an anchor set pretty far back and the pull is very hard, almost stuck my rope here. There is another anchor that much further forward that should be used, I didnt notice it until on rappel. Replaced chewed up purple webbing on the 2nd big drop, I think animals prefer eating colors like blue/purple more. This anchor is also set way back but pull DCR was fine. The big drops are both fun. The best part of this route is the massive chasm at the end. Borderline zionesque. Very pretty, bask in it’s glory. Exit out lets you see a unique and seldom visited section on West Fork, much different than the other sections further down. There is one deep cold swimming pool you go through (could be avoided with some serious effort going up and around). The sneak exit starts out fun and climby with some 4th class scrambles if staying in the drainage. Eventually you get to a blockage in the drainage you must go around. Here I followed the KML and went up the loose soil hill which was TERRIBLE. The hill is deteriorating under foot with little to grab on to. It was bad. Even after reaching the saddle, following the KML was pretty sketchy and not enjoyable. This exit eventually subsides into a low angle, pine needle laden, slippery hillside to get up to flat ground. Not great, would never do this exit again. If I were to do this canyon again I would shuttle.

Comment: This a great trip, well worth the vegetative hardships in the beginning and on the short loop exit. We entered the canyon immediately below R1. All rappels had anchors set and webbing was in pretty good condition. At R3 we skipped the anchor and instead used a tree set further back from the edge to allow folks an easier rappel start. Our 8hr car-to-car time is slightly inflated because the mandatory swim in Casner Cabin draw had a particularly strong draw on our 90+ day so we swam for a bit and also filtered water before starting the hike out. The hike out if doing the loop is no joke. We followed the GPS track relatively closely but got a bit too high on the right side canyon wall and got cliffed out before ascending through the next cliff band. We chose to go to the right around the spire instead of backtracking down canyon; this way is feasible but most likely more difficult than the published route. This is a wild feeling trip, you can tell not that many have come before you. Enjoy!

Comment: A hidden little gem in west fork with some funky little rappels and multiple exit options.

Time is for establishing a new sneak exit and venturing up casner caning draw a short distance. The canyon itself was dry, but the draw had some deep pools and one short but mandatory swim before the exit. All 7 rappels have anchors in place. The largest rappel being closer to 80'. We planned to establish a new sneak exit and we did. Originally we planned to exit up the draw but soon ran into deep un avoidable pools that were very cold. After a few cild swims we turned around and continued to the west fork confluence. At the confluence with west fork we took a drainage up on the right back to the car. West fork exit is neat and pretty but longer and requires a short (30 min) shuttle. The sneak or alternative route will enable a shorter loop but requires route finding up loose terrain. We found staying high and right of the drainage to work well. The water in the draw was very cold.

Comment: Quite a bit of bushwhacking on approach and many downed trees throughout the canyon. Lots of ferns and other vegetation throughout. A few very nice rappels. No water on descent, but one swimmer near the bottom of Casner Cabin Draw and a couple shallow pools in West Fork. Exit was long and strenuous but beautiful.

Comment: Unique Coconino slot that drops into casner cabin draw. All anchors except for one were set to safely complete the canyon. Would be smart to bring extra webbing to set what would be r3 or R4 from a large fallen pine tree in the watercourse 30' back. We used a Fiddle stick here. Short approach, Good Rappels, and a West Fork Classic hike for the exit. There is a fairly well worn trail as you get closer to the bridge.

Water can be filtered at canyon confluence with casner cabin draw, and at the last and o ly unavoidable pool.
