Comments: R9 anchor log unstable. It is balanced on a pile of smaller logs right at the anchor webbing. Anchor Log shifted down 3 inches when 205lb rappeller went vertical. The rest of the team down climbed. Water is low but still fun. R5 pool rock exposed about 1ft above the water. Great day in Davis.
View in attached photo is from midway down the down climb, looking back up-canyon at anchor. The anchor log is the horizontal log in the photo. Webbing is just visible at top of anchor log.

Comment: Great day out. Wonderful weather and terrain. Water is relatively low, still great swimming. Skipped the redirect on R4. No special challenges.

Comment: Very fun day in Davis! All the anchors looked to be in great condition and the jumps were great! We used the redirect for R4, but the flow was plenty tame to have gone straight down. The swirling pothole for R7 presented no challenges to any of the members.

Comment: Davis: classic fun as always. There is a new giant rootball jammed in the opening of the hanging pool on the big rappel (just below unlinked anchor at R4b). Didn't affect the rappel or pull, but could cause issues for anyone trying to climb out of the hanging pool in high water. Found part of a rusty metal cash box (?) at the final rappel and packed it out.

Comment: Beautiful trip down Davis in the late afternoon. We suited up at the car and left down the trail at 4:45pm, and were surprised to finish only 1.5hr later. So I updated the beta to reduce the time range to 2-5hr, from the previous 3-5hr. We had done Lewis earlier in the day. Davis was quite markedly a much better canyon than Lewis. We also camped that night in the field at the start of Davis.

Comment: Flow was a2, moderate-low, easy to walk in the middle of the flow anywhere, very grippy. Everyone had a blast. This canyon never gets old. 5 noteworthy jumps, 5 downclimbs, 1 waterslide, and 3 longish rappels, all in a deep beautiful canyon.
Upper Section: 1. DC left 10' on natural staircase, 2. DC left 10' through logjam easier than it looks, 3. DC right down natural ladder, 4. 70' rappel on side of waterfall do a J-tie at next botls, 5. 50' into plunge pool (can off rope on ledge and jump 15') multiple jumping perches from 5' to 20'. Lower Section: 1. Chute can be downclimbed almost all the way but rope needed at bottom, 2. slide on right 15' (or jump from left 20'), 3. downclimb on right 10' through logjam, 4. jump 12' into hanging pool (CW circulation) then DC 4' at pouroff, 5. rappel 50' at bridge, 6. jumping pool up to 10', 7. short downclimb/scooch logs, 8. small jumping pool, 9. finale is an overhang rappel 15' into a grotto and cave accessed through rabbit hole.

Comment: Great day in the canyon. The log rappel in the begin has a hornet nest in or close to it. Be mindful! Also, a bolt was installed that wasn’t there a month ago when we opened it. Not sure what the point is. It was at the same location as the old redirect for high flow sequence for Lower Davis Falls under the bridge.

Comment: Great way to spend July 4th! Very fun creek with great drops. Swirling potholes were not as strong as expected. 2 team members had issues with SP2, but eventually were able to swim out. R4a is a great rap and worth the drive itself. Team enjoyed the raps, the pools, and the pushy but manageable flow.

Comment: All bolts good, like the new additions. Not sure when looking at water levels they consider the cowlitz (dam regulated) as an indicator. I would use the Cispus River, flows into cowlitz from the south, but similar drainage. My 2 cents. Water level was fun, but moderate. Never really pushy. Beta is good, recommend on the two swirling pools to jump them (into the sweet exiting spot) over rappelling into the SOB swim into the recirculation wall.

Comment: Edit on previous post, Cowlitz dam is downstream of the Davis creek, my bad. Cowlitz has much larger drainage basin up towards white pass. Cispus is a more similar drainage.

Comment: Davis was fantastic. Cold water (8mm wetsuits were appreciated). Swirling Potholes #1 and #2 were not as strong as anticipated and felt closer to moderate/moderate-high in terms of strength. The anchors were in good shape.

Comment: The pictures vary too much to land on what the levels were. That being said, it was definitely high and sporty. Notable items, the second tier on Davis Creek Falls has a large stump in it which makes it a bit easier to get to the new anchor. The big Boulder hasn’t moved. The logjam has progressed but very doable to get around. We jumped the first swirl pool DCL. The infinity pool and the V thread to help get out . Rap below bridge was straightforward and the log in the pocket is gone. The slidey log now has friends so as a doe see doe to get around it. All anchors are good to go.

Comment: Such a beautiful canyon! Davis has moderate-low flow at this point in the season, which makes it a quick and easy descent. There were no points where we felt the flow was dangerous or the hydraulics concerning. There were plenty of swimmers though, so with lower night temperatures the water was chilly and the members of our party with thicker wetsuits were the happiest. For the 120ft rappel, we used the DCR bolt station for the full drop and the pull was fine from the bottom.

Comment: Glorious 5* day. Echoing others in saying the new R4 option is much more enjoyable. Two of the group swung at the end of R8 as they tried to stay out the pummel. Getting into the flow and dropping straight down through it is the better option. Other than that, I'd call it mod-low everywhere else. |
