Comments: Since I was working on the Eaton Trail, my 1.2 hours is only the technical descent of Henninger Canyon. The canyon floor is still clearly of any brush issues, except for a few spots were I had to be careful about bushing new leaves on poison oak. Going through the sticker bush forest bypass, there is some PO too. That bypass route needs some TLC. The anchor for a main rappel (one right after the stick bush forest bypass) was missing and since I forgot my knife to cut my webbing, it's still missing. Otherwise all the main anchors are good. Also, I dropped my "Harry Potter" black frame round 3.0 readers somewhere in the canyon.

Comment: I parked at Roosevelt and climbed the Walnut trail, Wilson Toll Road, and the Henninger Express trail (runs up the water pipe). The approach was right at 1.0 hours, 52 minutes climbing up. I spent 15 minutes top getting a snack, checking messages, and changing clothes. With a little looking around I decided to drop into the canyon down a runnel that is about 50 feet uphill (North) of the bulldozed spot into the canyon off the roadbed. This runnel is easy to downclimb, once I spent 15 minutes hacking up the brush (Special challenges). Once in the canyon, I expected it to be badly overgrown, but in fact, it was mostly in good shape. I clear any annoying brush all the way (more special challenges), except at the mid canyon forest of sticker bushes. I realized that it would not be that much work to make it super nice, so I put in the effort. Even with all the trimming the technical run was only 2:40. All 4 webbing anchors were in good shape, except where a rodent had chewed on one knot tail, and I repaired that. I ghosted R1b (second half) and 2 other downclimbs/rappels. I bypassed one downclimb after R1a/b using the "bear bypass". I should add webbing to the ghosted locations for future runs. I hiked out down the Wilson Toll Road, then down Eaton creek and cleaned up a in the water before heading back up to the Roosevelt parking area. Exit time was 36 minutes.

Comment: OK, I'm back. Went up Henninger trail to the sneak path (very overgrown) and found where I could drop back into the canyon (see picture). Ghosted the next rappel off a sturdy bush (DCR). This rappel might be down climbable depending on your abilities. I didn't find an anchor here. The next two rappels had anchors w/ tan webbing (DCR) left by Willie. There are some nice down climbs in between the rappels. Fixed a hand line for extra security. Do what works for you.
This canyon could be nice but is very overgrown. I trimmed back some of the vegetation and yucca that were in the path. Need to convince eshi-1 to bring a gardening party to this one. Overall, it's a welcome alternative to Coyote Canyon.

Comment: First time in Henninger. It has the potential to be a very nice canyon with lots of spicy downclimbs but is very overgrown at the moment. Lots of tall grass and lush vegetation makes navigating the canyon a bit more challenging. Did some gardening but didn't make much of a difference. When I hit the thicket of spiky bushes, I went DCL and looked for a way back into the canyon. It wasn't obvious to me with everything overgrown so I keep following the animal path and ended back up at the sneak entrance. Decided to call it a day and come back to finish at a different time. The longer rappels had webbing and anchors from Willie's run.
Approach from Pinecrest took 1:15 minutes.

Comment: Another Super Bowl Sunday Front Range run. 1:15 approach. Sparse brush on the canyon floor thanks to Willie's gardening. There were a few standard front range rappels and some interesting downclimbs as advertised. Running this canyon is a cool way to internalize that even in highly trafficked areas with which we're very familiar, nature still has more layers to uncover.

Comment: Went through full Henninger and it as a lot better than my first experience. The past rain washed away many of debris and made the trail easier to follow. Things are still a bit overgrown is some locations such as the middle portion with the stickler bush. If I hadn't been in this section before, I would have had a harder time looking for where to go (up DCL on the animal trail but back into the canyon before you end up at the shortcut drop in). I was able to do some yucca trimming (I hate those bastards) and enjoyed the numerous spicier downclimbs. Overall, I'm beginning to like Henninger more and feel people should give it a try if they haven't done it. Bring some gardening tools.

Comment: Second round: I parked at Roosevelt 8:20AM and hike up the Walnut Canyon trail to the Mt Wilson Road, and up to the 4th major switchback 9:00AM; then worked on the path traversing back into the canyon by 10:00AM. By 1:00PM I had work my way back down to the Mt Wilson Road 1:00 PM doing several rappels. I then proceeded to run the lower canyon which had 2 downclimbs, 1 rappel and a LOT of poison oak! I wash everything off in the Eaton creek starting at 2:00 PM and was back to my truck by 2:45 PM

Comment: I got a "late" start at 9:00AM for this FD and started down the canyon at 11:00AM. The recent rains had flushed the weeds out of the canyon floor, but there was still a lot of brush that needed help. By 2:00 PM, I decided to bail back to the Mt Wilson Road at the 4nd major switchback (going up). It took 30 minutes to trim enough brush to make that exit reasonable, and it does have very steep sections getting down to the road level. Once back at the road, I ran Sneak Coyote Left Fork and was back at my truck by 4:00 PM.
