Comments: Lower flow than expected, fun water level, good flavor but no spice. Replaced hanging rebelay anchor at R5. Repelled from the new traverse anchor at R7, better line to stay in flow and avoids the awkward start at the original anchor. R9 cleaned some downed wood out of the chute at the top of the drop but a handsaw would be helpful to finish the job. Spent some time clearing loose debris from the logjam and the bottom was f the rappel. We got of rope and pulled from the top of the logjam to avoid rope tangle in the logjam. Easy enough to down climb from the top of the jam.

Comment: There are ticks on the approach, a member of our group was bit twice. Terrain used to access R7 is somewhat exposed and eroded, suggest using traverse line in order to access the rappel anchor. There was also a fresh log jam at bottom of R9. Beta has been updated. Overall fun day. :)

Comment: Flow seems to have decreased a lot in the past week R1 was fun but pretty tame. All rappels were in, all anchors good.

Comment: Outstanding fun day in the high flow. Bypassed R1, did all other rappels.

Comment: Steady rain was coming down all day, and we bypassed several rappels, mostly the ones where staying in the flow was mandatory and looked hazardous. The sequence down the main falls was quite spectacular and was the highlight of the trip. Anchors were in good shape.

Comment: Very fun but very wet and cold day out. We bypassed a few rappels. There was a bit more blowdown than last year in the canyon including a lot at the base of the final rappel. The big sequence is good and actually has 4 anchors going all the way down. Could stay out of the flow for the multipitch.

Comment: Super fun day in Hopkins despite tons of mosquitos. Team of 7 with 6 new to this creek. Great run that would have been even better with a bit higher flow. Some raps were very grippy while most were very slick.

Comment: First rap was the funnest and only one you could get an overhead dousing on the way down. R6 could be done down the gut in the flow from a small tree about 20 feet back from the other anchor. The other rappels were mostly out of the flow. An impressive old growth tree DCL just below R5.

Comment: Beware: R9's anchor was a wrap 2 pull 1 (to my memory) set high (eye height or higher) on a thigh-sized tree DCL. The first rappeler (avg weight) in low flow with proper rappel technique shook the tree back and forth a little bit. After he disconnected, I moved the webbing down to reduce leverage. I was the next one down so I did not get to watch the tree for movement but it supposedly was fine afterward. The lowered anchor made pulling difficult. If I returned to the canyon, I'd likely want to replace the anchor, maybe making it a traverse to a better natural anchor (both stronger and positioned easier to pull the rope down). I wouldn't be surprised if someone tries to move the webbing up for a better line, so please be aware (or build a better anchor), especially if you anticipate a larger load (or higher flow). R9 is not that steep but it is slippery, so it is easy to fall and increase forces on the anchor.

Comment: Just about the right level for Hopkins. Plenty of wet stuff to choose your own adventure in, but nothing which had to be avoided. Zipped packs on R1 so people could enjoy the biggest stuff.

Did R5 in two pitches, which provided a lovely ~200' rap line in the water.

Still damn slippery in places.

Comment: Fun day. Plan B. Noticed plenty of random and extra webbing. I guess this is a practice beginner canyon which is fine but let’s clean it up a bit. Noticed bright nylon cord holding up some black webbing.

Comment: Flow was not pushy and perfect for our group. Creek walking and rappels are super slippery!! We did R5 in 2 stages, 60 feet to the hanging anchor then 190 to the bottom. Hopkins is great, I love that all the rappels are close together without much creek walking. Run it before it runs out of water!

Comment: We did R5 in two pitches with a 200’ rope from the tree at the edge of the drop. Creek was very slippery which became tiresome with all the low-angle rappels. South-facing, open canyon gave us sun almost all canyon which was delightful on a cold day. All anchors in good condition.

Comment: First time down it, in an experienced group who'd done it before. As last report, only pushy where the creek constricts. Elsewhere the flow eases off very quickly.

First rap is probably the crux flow-wise, giving you little in the way of warm-up!

Replaced webbing and quick links in various places, including on the multi-pitch (did it in 3 pitches).

There's definitely fun to be had here in the next month or two before it dries out. (Set difficulty to "special challenges just due to the multipitch rigging).

    Watch out for ticks!
