Comments: Time reflects Magic and Windtalker. Magic was okay but not a great bang for the buck, really favor some of the others in heartwell.

Comment: After finishing Contigo, made the trek through some hackberry and locust trees to tie into Magic approach which is this beautiful dry creek lined with trees. Some of that steep sedona slab makes for an engaging approach to the top of the ridge. Passed the waypoint for Windtalker and realized we were on the higher shelf. Instead of backtracking, ghosted off tree which added a R0 of ~30'.
A really cool downclimb/slot section brings you to R1. One of the bolts was spinning. Replaced webbing on R1-R3. Made a stop by the most incredible petroglyphs I've ever seen in Sedona and Elvis's house on the way out. Is the juice worth the squeeze? YES. FUCK YES.

Comment: The approach to this canyon was easy...until having to exit the wash. From there, there is a lot of bushwacking, trailfinding (mostly non-existent, just following kml file) up to the start of the canyon. But the reward is immense. Beautiful views, great rappels, and fun memories. We ended up above the start of the first rappel so we set up a R0.5 to get down into the bowl.

Comment: Is the juice worth the squeeze?
If you're looking for a true wilderness experience in Sedona this might fit the bill. The approach is mundane and crosses into what's labeled as private property. Up a shaded boulder filled wash for quite a ways. There's a couple of spots to turn up left into the approach canyon. This time things were wet so we headed up the main canyon bypassing tricking water and slippery slabs. The earlier 4th class option up the left side was not safe due to water and icy slabs. We spent a lot of time navigating to r1 (3 hours from the car), taking rest breaks and negotiating the terrain. R1 has a bolt on the right that was spinning but we tightened it down. Bring a wrench. With water and ice on the entry downclimb we rigged a rope around the big tree in the watercourse to get down to the anchor. The rappels come in quick succession and then it's time to return the way you came. Good rappels in a wild area, would be neat but hard to access with some decent flow. Probably best run dry to keep the effort down on the approach and make the experience more worthwhile.

Comment: Worthwhile route.
1.5 hr approach 1 hr canyon 1 hr exit Anchors looked good for now but are starting to fade. New webbing on In a few months could be good. We used the Fiddle stick on the 2 big rappels and a CEM on the 30ft. All rappels very pretty and enjoyable. Nice alcoves and features on the short descent. Once leaving the riverbed on approach, we stayed to the left scrambling up the slick rock, avoiding the brushy drainage on the right. This seemed to be a far better option. Minimal effort on approach. Will repeat.

Comment: The KML was spot on. The cairns mentioned in the Approach section are no longer there, but not needed. The webbing on all rappels appeared new. The 1st and 3rd rappels are fantastic. We spent considerable time exploring ruins and rock art on the approach.

Comment: Great canyon with some awesome views. I highly recommend taking a walk along the red rock bench before beginning your decent of the canyon. The canyon itself has some great raps, especially the final sequence and there is a well established social trail for your approach and exit. Some route finding and scrambling to get up onto the bench.

Comment: Had a lot of fun messing around on the beautiful red rock shelf. Magic is one of the Sedona classics. The views are incredible. The rappels are also incredible.
Thanks for putting this route in Garrett. Video trip report: https://vimeo.com/653535585

Comment: Replaced the webbing on R1 and R3 for the big rappels. Webbing on R2 still looked good. Didn't measure while we were there, but the first big rappel might be longer than 175'? Didn't have much rope left in the bag after throwing a 220'. Fun slab climb up the left on the last approach section to avoid the bushwhack, handline useful in one spot.

Comment: Last portion of the approach is rather brushy (could possibly avoid some of the denser sections by staying left and scrambling up the sandstone slab), but the epic views of the formidable coconino cliffs across canyon more than make up for it. The two big raps were a lot of fun and we had no issues with rope pulls. All in all a great Hartwell option with noteworthy beauty.

Comment: an excellent adventure through a part of sedona seldom seen. The approach is steep but straightforward. Follow gully up to where you can traverse traight over to r1.
Interesting mini slot sections that follow a watercourse to 3 rappels. r1 and r3 are bolted and fantastic. R2 was not present and was probably taken by hikers, ruin hunters, or more likely by climbers who have been frequenting the area. we placed an anchor ldc off a tree for a nice 25' overhung rapp . Be prepared to build an anchor, fiddle stick, or bypass ldc. Overall a very scenic and interesting section of rock with 2 very good bolted rappels.
