Comments: I didn't take extensive notes, but I downclimbed or jumped everything but the last drop. We encountered no webbing and no bolts, so come prepared if you prefer solid anchors. One of the drops in the middle appears to be a jump but has MULTIPLE SHALLOW BOULDERS! DO NOT JUMP THIS WITHOUT KNOWING WHICH DROP IT IS! I downclimbed DCL this after sending my first down on meat, but note that I assume most would NOT want to do so. Be prepared to build an anchor.
Getting to the jump (easy off the root ball from one of the logs in the pool) is a slightly exposed traverse. Be cautious or use a belay if you're not used to that kind of movement.
From the obvious log behind the last drop it is about a 55' drop. I'll update the beta. The jump described didn't appear obvious to me. Besides, it's a great rap.Good, short day out if you're looking to kill a couple of hours.

Comment: We moved the R1 anchor back due to low confidence in the initial anchor placement - the pull was still OK. Set up meat anchor and downclimbed (DCR) on R3. R6 had webbing around a large log high up DCR. Flow was OK, but it could definitely make the canyon a little spicy in high flow getting to the last two raps due to exposure (pour-overs).

Comment: Low flow. R5/R6 water is mundane. I removed the DCL anchor I had placed earlier this year due to high flow. Check that conditions report for clarification.

Comment: Amazing conditions right now with some serious flow coursing through R5 and R6. A fun canyon to squeeze in after work on a long summer day, with low pay to play ratio.

Comment: Panther panther panther... what a great run. R5 into R6 was legit at high flow. We staged one below with a throw bag, swam to DCL, and created a new anchor on this side of the chasm (from suspended tree), because water levels made it impossible to climb out DCR.

Comment: Three outstanding jump opportunities. Very low pay to play ratio. A 2 minute exit hike. The final jump is most noteworthy.

Comment: Fun, scenic canyon. Giant logs and logjams to climb over and marvel at the power of nature. My favorite part was the last jump, ~20 ft into a narrow but deep corridor. All anchors in good condition, some with brand new webbing (thank you to the last group through!) Last drop, if bolted, would be fun to run in the watercourse in this late season "low" flow. 1st stage through a narrow chute into a small pothole with a hydraulic. Rappeller would be taking the full brunt of the flow, and it would be a lot. 2nd stage the water spreads out to the bottom of the drop.

Comment: Super short approach for an awesome payoff. Super deep pools, lots of jump potential and many opportunities to go back up to do it again. There was much lounging in pools. Water still running good in Panther in early September and enough that you probably do not want to be in the flow for the final drop the chasm. We were able to climb out on a large ledge DCR and set an anchor on a new (?) log spanning the chasm. General agreement that the last drop should probably be bolted for safety. Another great creek at Mt. Rainier NP!

Comment: A great day and beautiful gem of a canyon. Thought this would be a first descent, but found webbing at the last drop off of some very carefully wedged boulders. Webbing was damaged from floods so we removed it. I human anchored Kevin down and he checked pool depth. It was very deep so I was able to jump from the ledge. A very fun canyon. Very cold, bring ample neoprene. |
