Comment: Had a great time running the full canyon and exploring the mine. The traverse approach starting from halfway between the saddle and the summit was fine. All anchors were in good condition. There's some wading in the lower canyon but not much above knee level.

Comment: Took Heaton Flat trail to Allison Mine trail. As other reports have noted, this trail is overgrown in many areas especially in its first half, resulting in long detours and much pushing through brush. We did six rappels in the technical section, five of which had fresh webbing and quick links. The technical section was beautiful and reminded me of Great Falls of the Fox. Waterflow was enough to get wet on some of the falls but there was no swimming. Exiting down Allison Gulch went slowly due to all the boulder-hopping and navigating around obstructions (plus losing the light due to not starting early enough), but things went quicker after reaching East Fork.

Comment: We went up Heaton Flats trail to the Allison trail. Allison trail is severely unmaintained, some sketchy parts, bushwacking, and sometimes hard to find (also a decent amount of bear scat on the Allison trail). I highly recommend hiking poles to help out, as well as some shears or pruners to deal with some badly placed Yucca. The technical part of the canyon is fun and posed no issues, water got only up to thigh high, but that was in one spot. The tree used for rap 3 is dead and we opted not to use it, I recommend not using the tree. Some downclimbed this spot, others rap'd using a different anchor we ghosted. Once back on the main trail back to the cars, the water was a bit high which made you think before you crossed. All in all it was demanding, but fun.

Comment: Missed the turn off for Allison Gulch on the approach because we were too busy tramping around in the East Fork, then initially started up the wrong gully. So after wasting some time with that, we decided to really use our GPS to make sure we didn't lose any more time. I don't think we would have found the "steep gully" approach trail without the GPS. You don't really go up a gully, you're on more of a ridge between gullies. Once we got to the mine site, we had a little time to spare to explore some of the mine shafts, which was nice. The canyon proper is quite enjoyable, though as stated, it is/was a lot of work for a relatively short section of technical canyon. I think we'll do this again as an overnight via the Heaton Flats trail to get access the upper canyon as well. The route involved only ankle/calf deep water and you barely get splashed by the waterfalls. Lots of poison oak to keep you on your toes!

Comment: The upper section is now available via the bushwhack posted. All raps have slings or bolts. special challenges are claimed due to 5k feet of elevation gain, a half mile bushwhack traverse, and a scree chute drop in. We took two days in order to put in bolts and slings and to scout out the traverse, so it should be do-able in a day to a conditioned bunch of brutes, so long as you start at dawn and hustle.

Comment: This is a gorgeous canyon! Difficulty varies with time taken and group size. The approach is a bear either way, so if you camp at the magical mine site and take your time out the next day it's better.

Comment: Long hot approach hike, a few nice rappels. Didn't end up having time to explore the mine since the approach was so long and hot. Would be alright for a cooler day

Comment: Possible water to mid-thigh. Air temp was about 80ºF A tiny bit of spray from bigger waterfalls. Bring a lightweight jacket or fleece just in case, this canyon gets a little windy.
